The sky darkened as night began to fall. Kiri walked the back alleys searching for a shortcut home. She had stayed out late to watch a movie with her friends at the local Cineplex. She never would have imagined it was this late.
Kiri knew her mother would be waiting at the door ready to lecture her about curfews and gangs. And she was not ready to hear it just yet. "The park is just a few blocks away..." she whispered to herself. And after much debated thinking she decided to go there.
The lamps were dimly lit around the perimeter of the park. And the trees had lost all of their leaves. The night air howled lightly through the bare branches" I never realized how spooky it is at night." Kiri breathed a sigh of fear. "I better go home now," Kiri thought to herself.
Kiri walked down the empty sidewalk. An icy frost coated the tips of the grass blades. Snow would come soon. Winter had alway's been Kiri's favorite season. The smell of evergreens, the sugary taste of the first snow, the sounds of bells and cheerful laughter. She smiled as she imagined sitting by a cozy fire with her cat fluffy on her lap. Her warm memories kept her mind from the bitter cold that enveloped her. The stars twinkled above her head, and she couldn't help but to stop and look. " I wonder where the big dipper is?" She wondered to herself.
The big dipper never came into view, Kiri put her focus back on the long walk home. The sidewalk seemed to go on forever, where was the end? "I've been walking for at least twenty minutes. I don't remember the park being this big." Kiri's eyes began to water, she quickly wiped them. "I must not cry, yes. Perhaps I'm just walking in circles." Satisfied with her final thought she kept on.
"What was that?" Was it just a trick of the light? Or was it really a person behind those trees. The dark shadow crept silently among the green branches of the fir trees. Kiri kept her eyes on the trees as she quickened her pace. "Wasn't there something in the news about a murder recently? No! No! I mustn't jump to conclusions!" Kiri became frantic, and found herself running.
Whatever was in the trees saw her and gave chase. "No, No, No, No, No!!!" Kiri screamed at her stalker. Kiri's head ached as her blood flowed rapidly through it. Her breaths became more harsh, and her legs quivered. And yet the sidewalk continued. Kiri could not go on any longer, she pushed her body onward. Until it could take no more. She fell to the frozen earth, and the world around her darkened.....
Kiri opened her eyes slowly, the bright rays of the sun glistened above her. Her entire body felt frozen. She sat up pushing a large mound of snow off of her lap, and looked around her. The park sparkled brilliantly with its new blanket of snow. Kiri laid her hands behind her back and leaned on them. She lifted her chin to the sky and absorbed the warm inviting heat the sum ommited. Kiri closed her eyes. "Man, mom is going to be so mad at me." She laughed.
Something wet brushed her cheek. Kiri's eyes shot open. A large black eye blinked softly at her. "A d-deer!" A large reindeer lay beside her. " Why didn't I notice it before?" Kiri wondered. The reindeer stood up, and Kiri followed. The giant deer walked through the snow, down what seemed to be the sidewalk. And Kiri followed, curious as to where it was going.
Wait. Was that the entrance? This deer showed her the way out. Kiri looked it in the eye and smiled. "You were the one watching me, weren't you?" The deer seemed to nod. Kiri wrapped her arms around its neck. "Thankyou so much!"
The deer stood watching from the parks gate until Kiri was out of sight. Then it turned and went back to the grove of trees that it called home.
Kiri was almost home, she knew she would be in trouble. But she was glad that she would be somewhere warm and inviting. She giggled as she remembered the deer's kindness. And decided she would visit him tomorrow. As she walked up the stairs and opened the door.
