This is one of those series that you have to watch before you can even say you've seen anime. Full Metal Alchemist is a high quality, well rounded series with a balance of plot, action, humor, and suspense. For a great deal of the time, the audio track is on a whole different level, and everything is well placed.
The story revolves around 15 year old Edward Elric and his brother, 14 year old Alphonse Elric, as they journey across the land to find the legendary 'Philosophers Stone'; a jewel of legend that has the power ignore the alchemic principle of equivalent exchange. Why are they searching for it? In order to restore their original bodies, which were lost when they tried to restore their dead mother to life using alchemy. Under the eye of Colonel Roy Mustang they uncover the true nature of the Stone, the history of Ishbal, and the military itself to the highest levels.
Story line is 10/10 for me. It's interesting, easy to follow, and well explained.
Animation and effects are also 10/10. It's a little overdone sometimes, but very cool.
Music is an 8.5/10 When it matches the scene and characters, it rocks. When it's out of place, you can feel it in the whole scene and it wrecks the mood.
All in all, FMA Gets a 9.5
Definitely worth checking out.

Anime in Review
This journal is a list of anime series I've seen, both good and bad. I'll include reviews, my personal scores, a (non-spoiler) plot preview, and if I feel like it, some screen shots. Feel free to comment.
