Welcome.
Today we're going to be civil. We're not going to insult (intentionally, at least), we're not going to berate, and we're not going to try and start anything unsavory.
We're just going to explain, maybe even ask.
Now, if you're reading this, it is likely that you do so out of curiosity. You want to know what I have to say. Maybe you enjoy my opinions, maybe you hate everything I represent. Whatever the case, whatever your outlook, sit down and listen, and allow your preconceptions to leave you. Today we talk about Gaia, commerce in particular, and what it is becoming.
I doubt I need to reiterate what once was: Days of simple enjoyment and glory, days when fighting was fun and purposeful, days when roleplaying was genuine and heartfelt. Maybe you were here through these times maybe you weren't. Either way, they happened, and we who did experience them miss them, and can never be content with the current state of Gaia. I can assure that this is the only reason I'm still on this site. I need to see the goodness restored, and I doubt I'll leave until it is so.
So when did it happen? How did it happen?
I'll tell you.
It's our fault, my fault. I did this to you, and I'm so very sorry. I along with many of the people you consider to be old and powerful, ruined your Gaia. We did something so stupid, so childish, so ignorant, that we should be purged from this place and stripped of our titles as leaders. We gave in to the thing that we had resisted for so long, the one sin that ruined your Gaia: Vanity.
I am not, of course, referring to our characters. In fact IC vanity is one of the most interesting and enjoyable mindsets, if played correctly. No, it was our vanity OOC, my vanity OOC, that maimed everything that was fun and good. We grew used to our positions, our high and mighty thrones of power, which we had earned through our own mastery of Gaia's fighting arts, and through the brilliance of our own minds. We were the best on Gaia, we still are, because we learned invaluable lessons during that time of war and battle.
None of you newer gaians will ever be as great as we are. And that is not vanity, it is simple logic. We struggled to attain our powers fairly, we fought fair, honest fights to establish our dominance, and we still, after all that, came out on top. We were heroes of the highest caliber.
What is vanity, however, is what we did with our new seats of prestige. We bestowed upon ourselves unnecisary power. We made our characters sickeningly strong. In doing so we set an example for those who came after us that power did not need reason to be attained, your desire was all that was neccisary. Gaia is a place where your wildest fantasies could become real, but when one's fanstasies became too large they broke the boundries of reason, and in doing so ruined the world. Now the problem was no longer my fault, it was everyones.
Why did you do it? Why did you become like us? Why didn't you say, "Hey, bieng that strong is stupid, weakness is what causes conflict, real and honest conflict! Give yourself weakness you fools or death and life will mean nothing on Gaia, and you'll ruin it for us all!"
Because you wanted what we had, that's why. You were deluded, as humans are wont to be, by the power we wielded. But what did we weild? We weilded dispassion and emotionlessness. These things are not acceptable! They are not human! No man lacks emotions, no man lacks feelings! We became ROBOTIC!
And Gaia lost its soul for it.
And now I sit and watch, and wait for the person who can rectify my Gaia, the one I created with my hands and my arrogance. Is it me? I doubt it. Perhaps it is you.
Perhaps you might decide to make your character a human bieng, to stop with all of these ridicuous and powerful races that feel nothing and are nothing.
Perhaps you might make your new race act human, so as to make it more real and true.
Perhaps you might do what I have done, and give your creation a soul. Perhaps you might want to give him everything that a real soul has: Weaknesses and vices, desires and loves. And in doing so you can help repair Gaia's soul, even if just a little.
Remember:
The Blessing is the Curse, and the Curse is the Blessing.
