Six days.
That's how long we've been tracking this thing. Everything inside of me tells me to turn away, because I know once we find this thing we're going to regret it. There's been signs of a medium sized beast romping through these woods, thrashing forest growth and killing anything that is unfortunate enough to get in the way. We've got enough dead rabbits to feed a tribe of Indians for a year. Seriously.
The specialists guess that whatever this thing is, it isn't a natural animal because animals don't leave fresh succulent bunnies in their wake. Another weird thing they've noticed is this slimy substance on the carcasses and the trees this thing has slashed. It's like thick bile, but smooth to the touch and warm, like a blackish piece of living skin. That's what I thought it was, the specialists laughed at me. They said that skin that had no fresh blood would not be warm, maybe cool at best, but not warm. Anyhow, the goo-skin is now sitting pretty in test tubes to be brought back to control when we return.
And I'm the new inside joke with the nerdy bastards.
Damn ********] specialists...what's so special about them anyway?

We split off into three groups to be more efficient and, luckily, I only got one specialist a** in my squad. I won't lie, it was really liberating to point my handgun between his eyes and tell him exactly where I'd put the bullet if he made a single comment about the skin.
That gave my boys a laugh.
We swept through our designated area and found nothing, then our radio and satellite equipment shorted out. I figured we'd stop there and turn back, there was no need to get caught flatfooted if whatever the thing was gave us the jump. when we returned we found that no one was back yet. Not suprising, since we were early.
I figure we wait about a half an hour, then try the equipment again.

It's been seven ******** hours, no one's come back.
Now I am seriously worried. Not to mention tired, 'cause I'm that too. So what do I do? I put in a call that I should have put in a long time ago. I try to call Ghostspec mission command and I hook up with Marcy, sweet girl (if not a little too round for my liking) and good friend of mine. We chat for a bit, you know- How's the kids? How's the job? How's you're estranged cousin billy, and oh by the way, I'm pretty sure ten of our boys have been mauled to death by a messy black monster...
Really put a damper on our friendly chit chat, it did.
I asked her if we could get any extra men shipped over, but she said that no one was available other then dropship pilots. That was good though, at least we wouldn't be stranded.
Then she tells me something funny, she tells me that all of the other operatives are fine. She says that their vitals are registering them as alive and healthy, about one hundred and twenty feet northeast. appaently they had been camping around that area for about four hours now. Suspicious, isn't it? She thought it was too. She put me on hold for about five minutes while she talked with the director, Jonas Whitler, he gave her an update to my objectives and promised an evac hovercraft was on standby for me.
I told them that the estimated response time for an evac call is about three minutes. If s**t gets thrown down, they better be here yesterday.

After getting off of the phone with Command we packed our stuff and headed off towards the northeast, halfway there I noticed that same black skin hanging off of the branches and foliage we were walking through. We backtracked to our previous position and noticed that it followed the path we had just walked, almost the whole way. The specialists had a field day scooping it up into their test tubes, but I worried. If it was following the same path as us it meant that it had either been at our previous position earlier then we were, or that it had come to that position while we were still there, which means it could have been following us the entire time. I didn't have the heart to inform the Specialists, they were having too much fun collecting samples, but I made it a point to tell my soldiers to keep up their guards. We slid down our infared optics, becuase if this thing's skin was still warm when it came off, you could be damn sure it was warm when on the thing. When the nerds were done we turned around and, once more, moved on the position our teamates were at.
We were about ten feet away when our infared picked their heat up. They were all laying down, which gave the distinct impression of death. Apparently that impression was wrong. we whipped our sensors off and recoiled back, they looked disgusting. First off, there were gaint holes in their chests, about the size of baseballs, filled with the black fleshy goo. Disgusting as that was, it wasn't all. Their skin was pale as snow but all of their veins were inky black. One of the sepcialists took the pulse of one of my soldiers and confirmed what Marcy had told me, his pulse was slow, but normal. Maybe it' me, but I thought when your blood was replaced with black goo, you stopped living.
Well, teamates secured...I think.
