((This is another result of writing practice turned into a mini-chapter. This time it's about a new character, Umeko, meeting Sharaph from Atlantiana.))
_____Her hurried footsteps echoed off of a nearby building. Umeko ran down the empty path with no destination in mind. She wanted so badly to drown out the thoughts that couldn't be silenced. The stillness around her became unbearable and she found herself drawn to the lights and sounds of a busy street. She had exhausted all energy by the time she got there, but Umeko couldn't care less. She just let the tears fall as she gasped for air. _____After she had calmed herself, she felt a sharp tug at her senses. She looked up and through blurred vision saw someone quickly turn their gaze from her. She used the sleaves of her shirt to dab away the dampness from her eyes, almost certain that her makeup was ruined. That person stood perfectly still in the midst of the crowded walkway, avoiding eye contact with anyone that crossed their path. It was a foreign woman with half of her caramel-colored hair buzzed off on one side. Her dark, baggy clothes and ear gauges gave off a punk vibe, as did her indifferent body language. Umeko stared at the woman for a while, then the woman finally gave up and turned her almond brown eyes back to her. A pitifully weak smile graced her lips and she weaved through the crowd to get to Umeko. "I'm sorry- so sorry- but I, um, couldn't help but notice..." She stammered awkwardly, rubbing the back of the shaven part of her head. "Do you need a tissue... or something?" The woman spoke with a hint of an Indian accent. Umeko turned away from the woman. "I'm perfectly fine, thank you." She despised pity, especially from people who knew nothing about her. "Oh, I, uh... okay then." She spoke and averted her gaze, but continued to stand there in front of Umeko who eventually let out a frusterated sigh. "What do you want from me?!" She felt an irritated grimace begin to form on her face. "I thought you might want to- I dunno, talk about it? Maybe?" Umeko rolled her eyes. What good would talking to a stranger do?" _____She turned away and started to plan her path back to the dorms, but the woman's voice cut through the noise once more. "He doesn't deserve someone like you." Umeko turned so quickly that she ended up with a strand of hair in her mouth and had to pull it out before speaking. "How do you know about me?!" The woman chuckled and shrugged. "I figured it'd be trouble with a guy- or a girl if that's your preference, but either way they aren't worth all of this trouble, so... whatever." There was an awkward silence between them for a while until Umeko laughed, feeling both amused and annoyed at the situation. "That's nice advice, but I can make my own decisions." There was more silence. "...My name's Sharaph, by the way- not that you have to remember it. It just felt weird not introducing myself or anything." Sharaph looked away and focused on the blurs of people walking past. "...Umeko." She smiled. "Huh?" "That's my name. Umeko Fuse." Umeko turned to walk down the busy path. "It was nice to meet you, Sharaph. And... thanks for the advice." _____She didn't want to admit it to herself, but Sharaph's advice was something she's been needing to hear. Though she always admired him, there was always something off about Yami. At first this feeling was what attracted her to him the most, but over time it faded into something new- something that brought up fear she wished to ignore.
