There was this girl at work today-- she spent two hours in the store trying to find the right fitness shoe at a decent price. She was around my age, and understanding budget restraints myself, I set out to find this girl the perfect shoes.
And we found them. A champion brand fitness shoe called her name, and then when she found out about our Buy-One-Get-One (BOGO) sale, she set out to find some nice sandals that she could wear everyone.
Upon bringing her selection to the register, she heard me talking to another about how we were currently hiring. 'Serena' (that's supposedly her name) asked how to hire when she came up next, and I told her. And then we got onto a lengthy conversation about jobs. There was no one else in the store, so we just kept talking. We talked about previous jobs and retail, and then minimum wage and whatnot.
And then she saw the time, and said that she was trying to catch the Fitness Place down the shopping strip before they closed.
So I bagged up her stuff, and then told her not to forget her credit card, and she was on her way.
And then I noticed that the 'Please Swipe Your Card' screen was still flashing on the monitor.
She had distracted me, purposefully, and then left with the shoes.
And I let her.
And it pissed me off. I had been duped, and I was mad at myself like no other. She had just taken our shoes.
So my boss told me to go to the Fitness Center and see if I could catch her. Once I got there, they told me that they couldn't give me any information about their patients (it's a hospital run Center).
And then I was even more furious at myself.
And it's not like the items she took were expensive-- about $30 worth-- it's just that I had been duped and led on, and then felt like a total idiot after wards. I felt so stupid, I really did.
I'm still pissed off.
