Chapter 25- Into the Memory
I saw Candace and Maya get sucked into a portal, as I stared blankly. Where did they go? It was casted by their dad, as I glanced back at my own. He looked shocked, as if mom died all over again, which told me he didn't plan on the girls escaping. I looked at Jason and he nodded once, we had to get out of here. We started running towards the door, slowly opening it. Now I see why dad made it so huge. We almost had it open enough for us to fit though, when a huge blast of white surrounded us, sending us into a small hut.
Jason stared at me for a second, but began walking around through the hut. It had three bed rooms, one larger and two smaller, and one large living room that combined with the kitchen. I walked into one of the small bedrooms, and looked at the futon, It had a small blue rabbit on the pillow. I bent down to pick it up, holding it in my hands for a few seconds. Candace's room..? It was the same blue rabbit that she had with her before, in her blue bag. I put it back onto the futon, walking back to the living room. I saw Jason sitting on a cushion, as I sat on another cushion on the other side of the table.
"Hm?" I asked him. His stare looked blank
"Do you know where we are?" He asked as I gave him a nod
"In the girl's old hut, probably in their mom's memory" I replied, as he nodded once. The door suddenly flew open, causing Jason and I to quickly stand up.
"Mom! What's wrong?" A distraught Maya asked, as their mom closed the door behind Candace
"Go to your room and get everything you need!" Their mom slightly yelled, as Candace and Maya ran into their rooms.
Jason and I looked at their mom, as she stared back at us, almost as if she could see us. Jason and I glanced at each other, confused, but then looked ahead again as Ina cleared her throat.
"What are you doing here?" she spoke. We paused for a second, not sure if she meant us
"Us?" Jason asked, pointing to himself and me, as Ina nodded her head once guardedly
"We were sent here by you" he replied, as she froze for a second
"Sent by me in the future?" she asked, still staring at us. Jason nodded once.
"What happens to the girls?" she looked at the hallway for a second, then looked out the window, instantly forgetting her question
"What's happening?" I asked Jason, turning to him
"Your dad's soldiers are coming" he replied looking out the window
"Girls! Let's go!" Ina yelled, as she looked at me, but then opened the door, and started running.
Candace and Maya quickly followed after her, each grabbing either hand for support. I ran behind Candace, looking down at her, almost aweing at her small figure. She was at least two to three heads shorter than I was and her face still looked like a child's. She had large green eyes that brought out the pale color and the worry in her face, and had on a light purple dress that went to her knees, with white stockings that had dirt stains on it. She had the same blue bag across her chest that she does now, with little butterflies surrounding the sides of her head, and white sandals. She looked behind her, almost as if she was looking directly at me, as I paused for a second at how cute she looked. I stared at how green her eyes were; they looked like they absorbed the color of the trees surrounding her. She turned her head back around to face the front, as she tripped on a small rock, landing face first in the dirt. I ran to her side to help her stand up, but my hands went through her as if I were a ghost. Maya and Ina instantly turned around, with horrified looks. I guess she's always had that little bit of clumsiness in her.
"Candace! Stand up and run! We have to get out of here, now!" Ina yelled, as Candace quickly stood up and began running again behind her sister and her mother, leaving me slightly in her dust. I heard Jason let out a laugh, as I turned
I began running again, as I could see us coming to the edge of the forest, and the exit of the village. There was a loud thumping behind us, as Ina glanced at us, then past us at the sound. Maya and Candace turned around to see what her mom was staring at, them both having the same terror in their eyes, running faster.
"STOP" a deep man's voice called after us, causing me to slightly jump.
The girls brought their heads back around, as Ina stopped running, her eyes going wide at the man in front of her. The men from behind us caught up, grabbing Maya and Candace tightly in their arms.
"LET GO OF ME!" Maya and Candace scream in unison, kicking around
"Oh no you don't." a man's voice said to them, tightening his grip. The girls winced at the pain
"Lin! Can't you do anything?!" Jason asked, running to Maya's side
"What am I supposed to do!?" I called back, now at Candace's side. He looked at Maya.
"I don't know! Call them off!" he shouted towards me
"How? I'm practically a ghost!" I looked back at Candace, who looked terrified.
"Bolly, Tim, lets go" The man commanded who was holding Ina.
"Sir!" they replied in unison, as they dragged the family away
The dragged them in the direction of my dad's campground, the three girls now gone silent. We reached the camp, as they opened the large doors, that my dad always enjoyed building. Not that he did any of the building. They took the girls inside, with Jason and I close behind. Ina lowered her head, almost as if to hide her face from everyone, as the soldiers stared at them. We came to my dad's personal tent, the girls being shoved inside. I glared at the man who held Candace, not that he could see me, as Maya tripped a little on the entrance, but her mom caught her, balancing her again. Jason and I walked in, standing next to Maya and Candace. I stared blankly at my father. This was why he said he was going camping four years ago!? The man who held Ina captive went in front of the girls, kneeling towards my father.
"I brought them, Sir" the man said and left the tent.
My father looked at them each at their own turn. He looked slightly shocked, but then had a strange grin on his face, that I felt like wiping off with my sword.
"Ina! I see you've returned! And you brought some lovely lambs with you!" he said with a smirk on his face, looking at Candace and Maya.
I took a slight step in front of Candace, getting a strange look from her mother. Ina nudged them a little behind her back, glaring at the dark lord. He stood up from his seat, walking toward the small family, trying to grab Maya. She flinched away from his hand, my father looking taken aback, but then grabbed her arm, pulling her out from Ina's back. Jason tried to grab her back, but his hands went through her, as if he was a ghost himself. He was about to start walking away, but Ina suddenly grabbed her back, telling Maya and Candace to run.
They all sprinted out of the tent, with Jason and I following again, all going towards the exit. Some men were bringing in boxes, probably filled with more alcohol. They were a few feet away from the exit, as some soldiers suddenly caught them, dragging them away in the direction of another tent. Jason looked at me, but I looked away, feeling the guilt of what my father was doing to this family. We came to a tent, one my father would usually keep a prisoner in, and were pushed in again. In the far right corner, there was a man who looked at the family in shock. I stared at him, for a few seconds, as he glanced back at me and Jason. Kane. He tried hiding his face under his cloak hood, as the dark lord suddenly stormed in. He gave the family a strange grin, as he looked down at Kane, whispering something into his ear. Kane looked at him, then at his family in shock, he slowly stood up, looking at Ina, then to his daughters. I looked at Jason, as he looked back at me, as shocked as I probably was. Kane then chanted some words, the only word I could pick up was "Mythica" before Candace's and Maya's eyes went completely black. I stared at my dad in horror of what he had just done.
Ina suddenly grabbed her daughters, pulling them out of the tent running. Jason tried looking at me to catch my glance, but I didn't want to look at him. I kept my stare ahead at Candace, as she ran a little behind her mother. They reached the large doors again, but this time no one stopped them, as they ran into the forest. I could slightly hear my dad yelling at us to be stopped, but they were too fast for anyone to catch up. We ran for maybe twenty minutes, as a large tree root came into view. Ina slightly pushed the girls under it, as it was just large enough for the girls to hide under.
"Duck your heads girls." she whispered to them
"Can you see?" I heard Maya whisper to Candace, putting her hand on her head.
"No..." she replied, her eyes watering
"Mom? Where are we? What's going on?" Maya asked, still blind.
"We're at the old tree... my poor babies. Those monsters blinded you with that spell." Ina replied, her voice quiet
"It's gonna be okay girls, I can get your sight back."
"Y-You can?" Candace asked, tears running down her pink face
"Yes, we have to be quiet though, they'll be looking for us by now, I know we're far enough though." I guessed the tree was like a land mark for them.
"Now I need you two to be very quiet, it won't hurt but it will take awhile." she said
I looked at Candace, who was looking between Maya and her mother. Her eyes were pitch black, as if they've never seen sunlight, with tears in them. The sight almost made me want to cry. This is how my father broke up the family? By kidnapping the father, then blinding the children? I look in a breath, calming myself down. Jason looked at me, causing me to look back at him. His face looked like he was giving a silent apology, to what me dad had done. I shook my head, and looked back at Candace. Her eyes now looked more like a grey color, rather than the pitch black that Kane had made them, but they were scanning the area, to try to see her surroundings. Her mom kept whispering the spell, moving her hands over their eyes as they sat still under the root of the tree. Their mom glanced at us every now and then, giving us weird looks.
"How do you know them?" She asked between her spells, looking at us
"We met them in a forest" I replied back, with a blank stare
"When did you meet them?" She looked back at her daughters
"About four years into the future" Jason replied
I heard a stomping behind us, Jason and I looked behind our shoulder, staring at Kane. I couldn't tell whether he looked sad or mad, but he suddenly grabbed Ina from behind, dragging her a bit away from the girls.
"Mom!" Maya and Candace screamed, coming out of the trunk.
Candace suddenly looked mad, as she stomped up to him, her eyes now the same creamy blue as she has as her older self. She suddenly punched him in the stomach, causing me to let out a laugh. I guess that was why she's always somewhat hated him. Kane suddenly pushed her back down, as I went to her side, but Maya caught her before she hit the ground.
"Girls run away now!" Ina shouted at them
"No!" The both screamed back
"I didn't ask you! Run, he's not going to hurt me! Run now before anyone else comes!" she screamed more, then looked back to the wizard.
"I'll come with you! Just don't let anyone catch them!"
Kane looked down at her, as I heard her gasp a little.
"No! Mom what if we never see you again?" Candace cried to her mother.
Jason and I stood behind Candace and Maya, looking at Kane and Ina. Ina stared back at us, giving us a face that said something along the lines of 'take care of them'. Maya suddenly picked Candace up, on her shoulder, running away from their mother and leaving Jason and I behind.
"Maya, what are you doing?!" I heard Candace echo through the forest, as they ran deeper into the forest.
Jason and I stared at each other for a few seconds with worried glances. That was how we found them in the forest? Because they ran from their mother? I let out a grunt at my father. I didn't know how much pain he caused to such an innocent family, plus probably hundreds more. Kane let Ina go, and prompted her forward silently. Her face looked ashamed, or maybe scared of what was going to come next. Kane seemed like he was under the same spell before, when Candace was fighting him. I took a breath, following behind them. We eventually made it back to the castle, as Kane took them into the large tent where my father enjoyed sitting. I let out another grunt as my father still had the same strange grin on his face. He looked at Kane, and clapped once.
"You know what to do" He stated to Kane, as he chanted some more words, Ina's face going completely blank.
A flash of light suddenly engulfed us, as we stood in front of the castle again. I looked at Jason, and he looked back at me, both of us giving sad expressions. I suddenly heard panting behind us, as I swung my body around, to see two bodies emerge out of the forest.
I felt my guilt come back, as we saw them.
