[Start from Chapter one!]
Chapter 5
The sun shone into my colourless eyes as I sat up from my warm bed. Somehow, that man that I saw at the marketplace reminded me of the Dark Lord... but it couldn't be him, right? If it was, he would have surely called his wimpy guards on us and created a big ruckus in the marketplace. That feeling that I got when Maya, Neva and I left the marketplace was strange, almost as if someone was watching us. Not to mention Maya felt it too so at least I knew I wasn't going crazy. I shrugged it off as I looked around the silent room, my eye catching the new dress that Maya allowed me to buy. The dress went down to the floor and had a built in corset with a top that had a V neck- very much what you would expect a wench to wear.

"So..!" I exclaimed to Neva as I twirled in my new dress.

"How does it look?" I looked down at myself, then back to Neva.

She squeaked excitedly a few times and I smiled.

"So it looks good?" I asked and she squeaked in response.

"Yay! Lets go show Maya!" I jumped happily, swinging the bedroom door open.

Shopping is so my forte.

"Maya! What do you think?" I asked as I noticed she was eating breakfast.

She rolled her eyes but smiled, none the less.

"It looks cute on you!" She laughed, taking another bite of her oatmeal.

"You think?" I beamed. "Thank you for letting me get it, sis" I hugged my older sister, honestly missing the days when we were really close.

"Your welcome... Now sit down before your oatmeal gets any colder" She joked as I skipped to my chair at the table.

"You know that guy who gave us the gold bar?" I asked, not sure if she would remember him or not, though it would be hard to forget him since he paid us so generously.

"Yeah..?" she relied, almost knowing where I was going with this.

"How much do you want to bet he actually wears red?" I smiled as Maya's face flickered to anger, to remorse and then to shock under a second.

"Candace! Don't you ever bring that up! It's not funny anymore! Just drop it, okay?!" Maya yelled, standing up from her chair and stormed off to the bedroom, slamming the door behind her.

I looked a Neva with a shocked expression, though honestly she looked just as scared as I did. We didn't say anything to each other for a few seconds as I stood up slowly, bringing my bowl of unfinished oatmeal to the sink.

"Shall we go outside?" I asked Neva quietly, to give Maya sometime alone.

I grabbed my supposedly blue cape and scarf and headed outside into the snow with my friend to head to my meadow.

"Why do you think Maya got angry?" I questioned out loud. Maybe Maya and I have more secrets between each other than I thought.

"I guess I was bringing up the red knight a little too much, huh?" I sighed as I noticed Neva was flying down to the middle of the meadow.

Somehow this meadow always made me feel so at peace with my past and my life. I followed her quickly, tripping over my new dress and face planted into the snow a few meters behind Neva, and she began to laugh uncontrollably.

"Hey you!" I smiled as I lunged for her small body, turning into a butterfly as I landed on top of her, the two of us falling to the snow with a silent thump.

Neva and I flew into the air and she squeaked in delight as we flew around each other, trying to knock the other one into the dreadfully cold snow. Sometimes I think I get along better with Neva than I do with Maya but I guess that's because since we lost our mother, we've been a little distant. Maybe it was because we were so young... and now that I think about it, Maya really had to step up as a mother-like figure to watch over me.

I quickly shifted back into a human as Neva flew straight into the back of my head with a thud.

"Neva?" I laughed as I caught her with my hands, and placed her on top of my head.

"I guess I should apologize to Maya?" I asked looking up at her as I began to head back to the hut.

I hummed as I reached the forest, but immediately stopped as I heard scampering footsteps and a low gasp. I whipped my head over to the bush that made the gasping sound, staring at it for a good minute. Neva tapped my head with one of her small legs and I nodded in agreement. There was someone in the bush, who though, was the question. I headed over to the bush quietly, taking silent steps.. I was about to lunge at the bush when a butterfly shot out and began to fly toward my head - or rather what was on top of my head; Neva. I ducked down, immediately pulling Neva off my head and hid her in my cupped hands and turned around to see a man standing in the bush, glaring at the attacker butterfly.

"KAI!" the man yelled to the butterfly as I glared at him.

"You're the one I saw at the marketplace.." I frowned.

“Oh, you saw me?” he asked like he was happy that I did.

“You aren’t that hard to pick out in a crowd.”

I glanced at his clothes, the sight of them bringing my mind back to the day that Maya and I lost our mother. I felt a pang go through my heart just thinking of the memory. He was one of them. And he was here to get Maya and I. I whispered a spell, one that would prevent him from being able to move anywhere, pretty much nailing him to the ground as I quickly turned to run.

"Wait! I only want to talk!" the man managed to shouted to me as I ran off into the deep forest.

I ran for about five minutes and looked behind me, there was no way he was going to be able to follow me here. Luckily I knew the entire forest like the back of my hand.

"You alright, Neva?" I asked now opening my hands to let her free.

She squeaked, letting me know that she was alright. She paused and cheeped once.

"Yeah I know. He looks exactly like... them" I shuddered, as if my past were now coming back to taunt me.

She chirped again and I looked at her oddly.

"That butterfly was the same as you, but red?" I stared at her wide-eyed and she nodded.

Something about that guy was intriguing, but every inch of my body told me to stay away from him, and I wasn’t about to disobey. I shifted into a butterfly again and started my way back to the hut, only hoping that I wouldn't see that man again, and that he got the idea that we don't want him here. Neva and I fluttered in silence, now having to fly a further distance to get back because we ended up running in the opposite direction of the hut. Great. I sighed and rested on a tree branch. I guess I can’t fly as far as I thought I could. Neva looked at me concerned, but I shook my head letting her know that my wings were only tired.

I flew off the branch, heading back to the hut once again as a net came over me, capturing me within it. Neva squeaked in protest as I fluttered around the net, trying to escape. I paused for a second then sighed. What was I doing? I shifted back into a human as the person holding the net dropped it, letting out a “oomph”. I scampered out and began to run again, Neva following close behind. I'm sure she remembers that night four years ago as well I do.

“I’m not going to kidnap you!" the man yelled after me as I glanced back, the man was following me with his butterfly and they were gaining on us. There was no way in hell he was going to capture me. I turned into a bird and flew to the top of a tree, sitting on a branch at the very top. If he wanted to capture me, he'd have to get to me first.

"Dammit.. Where did she go" he muttered to himself as he then looked up at the tree that I sat on.

"Just listen to me!" He called at me as I looked to Neva and she nodded once to say that we should at least hear him out. I sat down on the snowy branch, changing back to human and shivered as the cold went through my body.

"So what?" I replied, looking down at him from at least five meters.

"Well... I'm not going to take you anywhere" he stated like he was here on peaceful terms.

"I'm sure your outfit says otherwise" I spoke sourly as I knew that all of the Dark Lord's henchmen always seemed to wear the same outfit.

He seemed to sigh in disgust but looked up at me, staring into my eyes.

"Would you just come down here?" he asked and I sighed.

"Sorry. I've had bad ‘experiences’ with people who come from the Dark Lord."

"Fine then. I just want to let you know that I'm nothing like the Dark Lord"

"Then why did you bother to come here?" I questioned accusingly.

"I wanted to see if the monsters and demons were real" I frowned in disapproval.

"Right. If you want to talk, I'm listening." I looked over at Neva and she looked like the desperately wanted to meet the other butterfly. I sighed although I couldn't blame her.

“Even if I told you about your mother?”

My mother? I looked at him in disbelief. “What about her?”

“If you come down, I’ll tell you about her” he said slyly.

“As tempting as that sounds, I don’t think so. If you won’t tell me about my mother, that’s fine with me. Anything else?” I stood up on the branch and turned to leave, figuring that was all that he had information on. I honestly really did want to hear about mom, if she was alright and if she was even alive.

"Your mom's alive" he said, like he was reading my mind.

"What?" I faced his direction with wide eyes.

Mom was alive! After all of these years! Why didn't she come to find Maya and I? What has she been doing these last years? What has the Dark Lord done to her?! What if --

"How do I know your telling the truth?"

"You don't believe me?" he playfully looked hurt and I rolled my eyes.

"No, not really. Should I?" I asked.

"Yes"

I looked over to Neva for support, but she was too busy starring at the red butterfly that was resting on his shoulder. I grunted in frustration as the guy laughed a little.

"Looks like love at first sight," he said to me. "Maybe it's a sign."

That definitely did not sit well with me. I looked back at him through the corner of my eye and changed into a bird. Something about him seemed different, but I wasn’t about to spend the time to figure out what it was. I flew straight to the hut, leaving the man deep in the forest. He’d figure out how to get out of the forest eventually.

I landed on the porch of the hut and changed back to a human, Neva opening the door as we stepped in quietly. I took off my cape and scarf, hanging them over the fire so they could dry off. I hoped Maya still wasn’t too angry with me, I guess I should have been more sensible with what I was saying. I quietly walked to the bedroom, to notice that Maya lying down, but awake none the less.

“Maya?”

“What happened to your dress?” she asked.

“I sat in snow by accident” I smiled. “I’m sorry for not thinking before I spoke this morning”

“Don’t worry, it was my fault too. I should have reacted better” she sat up and pulled me into a hug.

“Your freezing!” she laughed as I hugged her back. Neva landed on us, giving us a hug of her own.

“I guess that’s what happens when you go into snow?” I giggled now changing out of my now soaked dress and changing back into my normal outfit. I hung the soaked dressed up, to let it dry.

“I’ll make dinner tonight” I said as I got up to leave the room.

“Thanks!” I heard Maya call through the door.

It was the least I could do since she had been making the meals for the past several days. I left the bedroom, happy that Maya and I weren’t in some feud. I began to prepare the food, even though it was still a bit early. My mind wondered to the man I met in the forest. It was strange enough that we both had the same type of butterfly; but he was a complete jerk.
