If you haven't read the Cerebus by Dave Sim, you should check it out. I just finished the 9th volume, "Reads." In the 70's, Sim decided to draw, write, and self publish a 300 issue comic called Cerebus. Eventually he had someone by the name of Gerhard help him out with the backgrounds.
Cerebus starts out as a Conan the Barbarian parody about a barbarian Aardvark named Cerebus who travels around seeking fame and fortune. In the Second volume, "High Society," Sim mocks the upper classes by setting Cerebus up to become Prime Minister. "Church and State Parts 1 & 2" have Cerebus becoming Pope ( rofl ). "Jaka's Story" shows Sim further developing the character of Cerebus's lady love, Jaka. In this volume, we see the girl discover her passion for dancing. We also see her dreams dashed as first, her would be rich husband (and meal ticket) is stolen away by another woman, and then a radical feminist group called the Cirinists takes over and forces a brutal campaign of censorship throughout the country. Being a sleezy pub dancer, Jaka finds herself in the crossbow hairs of the Cirinists. Many see "Jaka's Story" as Sim's best work, and it certainly succeeds at character development.
Next is Volume 6, "Melmoth," as Cerbus sits on a porch staring into space, the final days of Oscar Wilde are reinacted for the reader.
