"Jacob!"
"What?" came a lazy reply.
"Come look what I found!"
A young boy, around 13 years old, walked over to his 10 year old sister.
"What did you find?" he asks, looking warily at her.
"A bleeding heart!" exclaimed Katrina, happiness filling her every word.
"I don't see any bleeding heart," he said, looking around.
Katrina giggled, pointing to a blood red flower.
"It's a flower, silly!" she gushed. She picked up the flower, and shoved it in Jacob's face. He inspected it carefully. It had two petals, each forming together to form the shape of a heart. And dripping off the end was another blood-red petal. It looked like the heart was really bleeding. He smiled slightly.
"I'll keep it," he said to her, watching her face break into a smile.
Later that day
Jacob put the delicate flower in a pot of soil, and looked at it lovingly.
"There's a little bit of something that I like to do," he said maliciously, "And you're going to help me do it."
He grinned, but not like he had when he was with Katrina. This one was pure evil. He cackled.
"All those who hurt me will pay," he muttered, "Even if I have to wait five years"
He pulled out a notebook and a red pen, and started writing.
"When I graduate," he muttered under his breath, "Those who hurt me will pay. Basically, the entire village. One will survive, the only one who ever respected me, or brought me any happiness.
"Little sister, I made a promise to you when you were five. A promise that I would always protect you, forevermore. I will not break that promise. You will be the sole survivor. Remember that, always and forever."
He picked up the notebook, and put it in his bedside table drawer. He drew in a shuddering breath, looking out the window. A small light was in the house next to theirs, and the stars were twinkling. He started when there was a knock on the door.
"Who is it?" he asked to whoever was on the other side of the door.
"The only one who would think it worth visiting you," said the voice on the other side of the door.
He smiled, "Come in, little sister," he said in a kind tone.
The door opened slowly, and he looked over to the scared face of Katrina.
"What's up?" he asked her.
"Mom and dad," she said quietly.
He sighed, and listened to the argument going on in the background.
"Dont worry," he said to his sister, "It'll all stop soon"
Katrina awoke with a start, looking around her, she saw that she was in a barn. She sighed.
Just another flashback, she thought to herself. At least she was learning all that was going on. She gave a start when she heard a stick break outside.
"Smas Curly" she muttered over her shoulder to the two sleeping figures. Smas stirred, and Curly was up in a flash. There were two yellow glints at the door, and two more appeared.
Curly whined as the eyes moved closer. There were in the barn. Katrina gasped, figuring out what they were.
Wolves.
