City lights blared, the sounds of cars zooming by and people shouting formed a sort of warbled orchestra unlike anything else. Some would call it sound pollution, but Alicia called it home.
The area around her home, anyways. The girl brushed back thick, curly brown hair to squint at signs with hazel eyes, pupils dilated even though it was technically night-time. She hunched coat-clad shoulders, one hand tugging along her little brother.
"Hurry up, Wade." She snapped, turning her head sideways to glare at the smaller boy. "We have to get home soon, I have homework to be doing."
Wade tilted his head from the sights to give his sister a sweet grin, blue eyes bright beneath his own thick brown curls. The little boy was in a big puffy coat unlike Alicia's sleek one; a dark blue that made him look like a blueberry marshmallow.
"Of course you want to go back to doing homework." Wade scrunched up his his nose with a roll of the eyes, smirking a little bit. "Cause you don't have friends, right?"
Alicia's face went hot with irritation, and she yanked on Wade's hand painfully. "Shut up, you little brat. It's past your bedtime anyways." She hissed, avoiding the jab.
Wade pouted, rolling his eyes. "C'moooooon, Alicia! This is a great chance to explore! We never do anything fun when we get 'midnight groceries'." The little boy struggled a little to pull one arm up, making air quotations and waggling his eyebrows. "We both know dad won't really care if we come in a bit later; gives him more time with those pretty ladies he drags in."
Alicia's shoulders stiffened up at the mentioning of said ladies, accidentally shoving harder than necessary into a nearby walker. The stranger gave her a dark glare, his mouth pursed around a cigarette. Alicia only spared a glance at them, tilting her head forward hurriedly.
"Shut up. Little brats like you shouldn't know about stuff like that." She hissed, pace slowing down despite herself. The prospect of exploring the city at night had always been oddly alluring, but Alicia had tried not to think about it too much. It was dangerous, after all.
