[i]Ever since that impromptu "Night Hike" which in retrospect might not have been the best idea; with the moon lit sky and distant howling it all pointed to bad news. But my over confidence outweighed my reason; all I needed was my hunting knife.
I was so naive to think I could defeat what came next. Even if I had a hunting rifle, I still wouldn't have hurt it. It was like trying to cut the wind. I was walking an animal trait when a shadow crept out the corner of my eye. My mind flashed to the image of a predator watching me, but I pushed the though from my mind as I walked along the trail.
The endless chatter of a river called out to me, inviting me to drink. I found my way to a clearing to the east ran a river and to the west a face of a cliff loomed over me water cascading down from it. And to the north a fallen tree had blocked the path ahead, they only way on was to backtrack and go around.
I turned to see a wolf cutting off my exit. It stood five feet high at the shoulder. Its fur was thick and a silvery grey color as it stepped into the moonlight that bathed the clearing. Gray bared its fangs, that were a sickening pale then growled deep and slow as if I had awoken it, with its body fully exposed Gray was huge.
Gray crept toward me looking me in the eye; they were an icy blue that stood out against the darkness. This animal was the embodiment of power and speed. Leave it to me to stand admiring this thing that could kill me.
Gray crashed into me biting down on my forearm as is had brought up my free arm to cover my throat. Even though it felt like someone stuck my arm in a vice that was and fire, it was better than being dead. His claws dug into my chest and shoulder. Its weight pushed me off balance and we fell entangled in a snarling, grunting mass of fur, blood and flesh.
I stabbed the hell spawn in its side as it shook its head digging deeper into my arm. Finally I brought my knee to Greys blood caked fur and it yelped in pain releasing me as I pushed it off me and began scrambling to my feet when Gray charged again.
I aimed for its neck but only cut its ear. And as quickly as it started, it ended. I stood there for what seemed like hours waiting for him to come back, to finish me off but it never came. The adrenaline was wearing off and I folded like a lawn chair clutching my arm and trying to put pressure on it attempt to control the bleed which I failed. My thoughts and movement were getting really sluggish. I got to my feet staggered my back to my jeep. The last thing I remember was looking up at the tire of my truck and wondering why the ground felt so warm?
