She had won the city wide lottery. There had been no joy for her, how could there be? She was an only child and so her parents were devastated. Her green eyes scanned the faces as she left the village. A single tear slid down her cheek. She'd cried herself out the past two days after she found out she had been 'chosen' to honor the city. She was to be sacrificed to the demons of the forest.

For her to go willingly to her own death was heart breaking for her parents, but that is what was asked of her. They had bound her hands so she wouldn't make any attempt once in the forest to break away, it was for the good of the village. The ceremonial robe she wore was slightly big, due to the tailor not taking the time to get it right. It was fairly cheaply made since it would be destroyed and never used again. By the time they reached the stone where she would take her last breath, it was nearly sun set. Those escorting her were in a hurry to make it back to the city before the forest got completely dark. They tied her hands securely to a loop in the stone. As they left her behind, the area in the clearing seemed to drop several degrees as the sun soon faded. She couldn't suppress a sob that escaped past her lips. She would never be able to live out her life like her parents had planned.
