Natural Death stood in a field. Though there was no wind, the various trees moved as if there was, even the reeds acted as though this world still breathed. Natural wasnt his name, though thats what he was called, it was his title as a leader on the Council of Death. And as the only neutral party in this decision, it had come upon him to talk to the new One Soul. Who was late. Well, no so much late as... lingering. New souls often got lost on their way to Purgatory, aka the Kingdom of Death. As the reeds bent to accomidate a teenager, Natural looked him over. He didnt look special, not like the first one had, glowing and overly done. He nudged the boy with his foot. "Get up." he rasped. "I dont have all day." Groggy, the boy responded "Lemme alone... I feel like Ive gotten hit by a truck." Natural snickered. "An 18-Wheeler actually. You flew pretty far." The boy opened one eye. "Im dead then?" he asked, somehow not suprised to see the black cloak and skull. Natural shrugged, "Thats up to you." The boy looked at him confused. "Usually, I'd leave you here to be dealt with by your personal reaper and you'd move on after a while. Instead, we have a problem and you might be the solution." "A problem?" Natural sighed. "Several problems actually, but they all come back to the same one. Ive been told that the One Soul, the soul that keeps things running smoothly, is either permanently dead, or hiding somehow. We need a new one, and you were chosen." "For what?" the boy replied. Natural sighed again, rubbing at his temple with a skeletal hand. "Im not sure. Half of them want to send you looking for the old one, the other half wants you to become the new one, or so they say." And I dont want another sacrifice he thought to himself sadly. "If you accpet, you keep getting reborn endlessly with your supposed counterpart, you decline and you stay here." "What?! I dont get heaven?!" Natural rolled his eyes. "You died early, through a technical suicide. Ran into the middle of the street, remember?"
