If you've been to my Profile, you should have seen my favorite movie list. I forget them often though...
District 9
Ok ok yeah I forgot that. This movie, directed by Neil Blomkamp (don't ask), asks the audience the question, what if the racist becomes the minority?
In South Africa, Johannesburg, A huge mother ship lands in the 1980s, the passengers, insect-like bipedals called spawns by humans, barely alive and tightly packed into the cargo bay of the ship. Ten years later, the company assigned to control the spawns, MNU (Multinational United) decides to move them from the old makeshift-habitat-turned-slum to a new District 10. One of the employee set to set a diplomatic mission is turned to a spawn himself after stupidly spraying himself with a mysterious chemicals (my, my, stupid people) He cooperates with another spawn that he calls Christopher to find a way to reverse his mutation. During his adventure, he learns the importance and the intelligence of the spawns and begins to understand them more and more.
So this movie was a whole new type... a mockumentary (documentary style) film and relatively low budget. But don't judge a book by its cover. It gives us a powerful lesson and lots of blood-splattering (oh yeah I think it's R rated). This is, in my opinion, a work worthy of nominations.
