Went out to the coop with Mom, Jagger, and Maguire. Today is the big fall clean-out, so it was lucky that they came along to help. The cart was loaded up with hay, since that's what we decided to use this time for bedding. I ushered all the chickens out, including Florian, who went in with the normal flock so we could put Burby and his girls in his pen, and started shoveling. After cleaning a fair, amount, we all decided to take a break. Jagger, Maguire, Mom, and Dad went down to feed apples to the horses while I stayed behind and sat with the chickens.
After less than a minute, Mom called for me. She was standing across from the turkey pen. I came up and she said, "Guess who has visitors?" I rushed to the Turk pen and looked in. There was a big fat tom and a new hen who looked like Gilly. Both were black with white tipped tails and a bronze gloss. The tom was gorgeous with a big snood and beet red face. I went in with an apple and tried to call them over. They seemed a bit shy, but they came up together slowly. I held out the apple, and eventually bit a piece off for them. The new hen took a bite, and then started chowing down.
Jenny was up in a tree watching the whole thing, and Gilly looked like she wanted to leave. I thought she might want to be held, but no such luck. After the new hen took some bites, the Tom came up and dug in. He certainly has a strong beak! I named him Hobgobbler, or Hobbes for short. The hen is now Calvin, or Caly. I was able to pat Caly a few times, thinking she was Gilly at first. Hobbes was shy, and it was hard getting him to approach me. It felt so good getting him to eat out of my hand. Eventually I had to go back and clean, so I said my goodbyes and closed the door.
After the coop was thoroughly clean, Maguire and I put powder on all the chickens. It took some time to chase and catch them all, but we managed. There were a bunch of eggs in Kimba's beard. I tried to take some out, but she started biting and stressing out, so I just powdered there.
I talked to Tom, and thanked him for the turks. He told me that they were good-natured. Apparently these aren't the turkeys we were expecting. Tom was talking to a guy and made a deal with him so that the guy would give up Hobbes and Caly in exchange for fertile turkey eggs. This is the same guy that hatched some of my eggs a while back and got white turkens. I really want to see him and the chickens. Also, someone may want the bantam roosters, which is awesome news. Hershey is now gone to a new home, and I already miss him.
I finally convinced my Mom to let me bring Kitty home to get her spurs potato'd. She seems pretty clam when I hold her, but it looks like she'll be a hazard to all the crap in my room.
