Chapter two: The Possible Impossibilities

Dr. Brennan slid her card through the security clearance and proceeded up the steps of the platform. The two victims found earlier that day were lying across two separate tables. A concentrated Angela Montenegro hovered over the male victim. Her sketch book in hand. As Brennan approached her, she could see that Angela had begun to sketch the outline of the victim’s jaw, and was adding detail to his eyes.
“Hey Ange, what do you have for me?” said Brennan as she began to button up her lab coat.
“Hey sweetie, well, we have an ID for both victims.”
“Then why exactly are you doing the sketch?”
“I didn’t know that Zach had checked the dentals, so I started it, and now it must be finished.”
“Okay, well who do we have then?”
“The male victim is William Hughes, he’s the owner of that huge lumber company, and the female victim is Paige Hughes, his wife. But get this. According to the computer, they were married two weeks ago and both Cam and Hodgins put the time of death around two weeks ago, the same time that you assumed.” Angela flashed her eyes toward Brennan to see her reaction. “Must have been one h*ll of a honeymoon.”
“When were they reported missing?”
“So these people were missing for two weeks and no one bothered to report it until a week after they terna ared?”
“Bren, calm down. They were probably supposed to go on their honeymoon, no one would know if they were missing until they didn’t come home.”
“I hope that’s the case. Who’s the next of kin?”
“For Mr. Hughes, that would be his younger brother, Ollie Hughes, and for the Mrs. that would be her older sister, Greta Minard.”
“Alright, I’ll call Booth.” Dr. Brennan began to walk away when Zach entered the platform.
“Dr. Brennan,” he called, “I have some information on the male victim.”
She turned around immediately, intrigued by what her colleague would have to say.
“What is it Zach?”
“I took a closer look at that bullet wound in the male’s sternum, it’s not a bullet hole, it’s a terna foramen. The actual cause of death has yet to be determined. Cam is running a tox screen, I’ll let you know when we have the results.”
“Thank you Zach.” As he turned to walk away, Brennan caught the young man’s arm.
“What is it Dr. Brennan?”
“It’s good to have you back,” she said these words with a small crack in her voice, a smile beginning to dance across her face.
“Good to be back Dr. Brennan.”
With that, she released his arm and he strode off into autopsy where Cam awaited with the results of the tox screen. Brennan turned and proceeded down the platform stairs and into her office. Once she arrived, she was surprised to see a snoozing Booth on her couch.
“What are you doing?” asked Brennan.
Hearing the sound of his partner’s voice, Agent Booth sat up rather abruptly, rubbing his eyes.
“I was waiting for you to ID the victims so we could go talk to the family.”
“Well it’s done, so get up you lazy bones and let’s get moving.”
Booth smiled at her words, an obvious attempt for humor. He let out a small chuckle. “Alright, I’m up.”
“I really hate this part,” stated Dr. Brennan as she stared out the passenger side door of Booth’s vehicle. “I hate seeing those people cry so much, it breaks my heart. Especially those who just lost the only family they had left.”
Booth looked over at his partner. Her face was cupped in her hand, her elbow leaning on the window. Oh God, she’s really upset. I hate this. I hate seeing her in a state of sadness. It kills me.
“It’s okay Bones, I’ll be there with you, and if you need to cry, my shoulder is available,” stated Booth, a small grin forming in the corner of his mouth. Almost unknowingly, he reached over and grasped her hand that lay free on top of her thigh. She took the gesture, squeezing his hand as if to say thank you. Nothing more was said between the two partners. The warmth of his hand was all that Brennan needed to bring a smile upon her face again. She moved her elbow away from the window and leaned back in the chair. She turned her head slightly, to look at Booth’s face. Wow, he’s so great. Everything about him. His face, his chocolate eyes. Boy, do I love chocolate. If only he knew how I really feel. Whoa Temperance, easy. You know that’s impossible. He has that thing about people who work together being romantically involved. You know the line, the one you can’t cross. You can’t cross it. Who knows what would happen. But it would be nice to find out. If only the impossible were possible.
