Goodbye Baby Navysteel Enjoy and anyone can add critique!
Rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop, When the wind blows, the cradle will rock, When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall, And down will come baby, cradle and all.
At the end of the sad lullaby a crash was heard from the bedroom. The Nanny of the little girl ran into the room and saw what had made the sound. A beautiful porcelain doll lay on the ground, half of its face missing and shattered pieces from its cold body were scattered on the wooden floor. “Thank goodness,” sighed the nursemaid, “I thought you had fallen from your chair.” The statement was directed towards a pretty, dainty girl in a wheelchair with long blonde locks and pale, ghastly skin. Her eyes were the color of blood, the same as her lips, and the sight of her sent mixed reactions of fear and shock throughout ones body. The woman who watched her and waited on her hand and foot smiled at the petite child and picked up the doll and her porcelain flesh. She could have sworn she saw the little girl mouth words to her but she must have been mistaken for when she rose the girl was facing the window, ignoring both her caretaker and the broken toy. “Goodbye Evangeline, sleep tight.” And with that the woman left. Evangeline finally looked towards the door and whispered, “Goodbye baby.” Before wheeling herself to her bed and crawling beneath the covers. The girl stared at the ceiling until a dreamless slumber overtook her.
In the other room Evangeline’s mother was in tears and her father was desperately trying to comfort her. “Jacob, the doctor said she would never walk again! How am I supposed to accept that! My baby! I failed her, it is my entire fault! I must have done something wrong during the pregnancy, how could I do this to her!” Jacob remained silent and simply stroked his wife’s hair lovingly. He loathed how his daughter made his wife weep every evening. It wasn’t right, it wasn’t fair. That broken brat had done nothing but caused pain for his family. “There, there Olivia. Everything will turn out all right. Maybe we could send Evangeline to a rehabilitation center for the handicap. I’m sure there they could help and soon she’ll be the little girl you always wished for.” Olivia looked up with tearful eyes full of hope and uttered the one thing that she could mutter, “We can only hope.” The couple embraced and behind Olivia’s back her husband smiled devilishly.
The truth is the family didn’t have enough money to send Evangeline to a rehab home, but Jacob had other plans. The next morning Jacob woke early in the morning and went to Evangeline’s room. The little girl was already awake and sitting by the window with a little doll in her hands. The man walked towards her and disguised his conniving face with a smile. The little girl adored her father and she smiled back at him, unaware of the horrible plan her father had conceived. “Hello Daddy”. “Hello there sweetheart! Would you like to go on a trip with Daddy?” The child nodded and asked, “Can I bring Baby?” the little girl showed her doll to her father and he told her she could. He picked his daughter up and he walked out of the house with her. His daughter spoke to him as they traveled down a forest path and he pretended to listen as he thought through his wicked plan. Finally they reached their destination, a lake. Evangeline became curious and asked her father, “Why are we here again?” He looked down at his daughter and seemed to just realize ho beautiful and lovely his child was. He hugged her to his chest and then looked back down at her. She seemed to know what was about to happen because she had tears in her eyes. “I love you Angel.” He said to her softly as he walked out into the water. Just as she was about to reply her father submerged her into the lake and held her down. The tiny, frightened little girl struggled against her father’s strong hands but she was weak and couldn’t loosen his grip. The man cried silently as he watched the child struggle but he couldn’t back down now and he continued to drown her. Just when he thought Evangeline would never die her struggling ended and her body went limp. Jacob let out a wail and dropped to his knees in the water. He cried and cried until his tears had run out and then he searched the lake floor for a rock. He knew as well as anyone that corpses floated and he had to keep the body down. Finally he found one and laid it on the middle of his daughter’s body. She looked asleep; the he cradled her like a newborn infant. Finally he let the girl go and she sunk to the bottom of the lake. If he looked closely he could see her there, lying down for an endless sleep. He almost though he saw her open her eyes……but knew it was impossible.
When he returned home that day he reported to everyone that Evangeline was at a rehabilitation center and would return when she was 16, which was in 11 years. During this time his wife wrote to the girl every week, needless to say she never received a letter in return. A year passed when the couple grew lonely without a child and they decided to have another baby. Nine months passed and it was a little girl with large blue eyes and ebony curls. The mother was happy to hear that her baby was completely healthy, not a deformity in sight. Jacob was thrilled to have another child after his horrific deed and finally thought that what he had done turned out for the better. One day Olivia decided to take her new baby Mari out for a walk around the lakeside. Mari slept in a bassinet while she hummed a lullaby gently. The stroller hit something on the path and the baby jolted awake and cried. The dotting mother went to the front to cheer her baby back to sleep when she noticed what she had hit, a porcelain doll. She picked it up gently and when the baby saw it she reached out expectantly. The mother smiled warmly and placed the doll next to her little girl and continued home, unaware of the ripple in the middle of the water.
Once they got home that night the woman brought the baby and the newly found doll into the nursery. She placed both into the crib and kissed her daughter goodnight before leaving the little one to sleep. Olivia went to bed without any suspicion, without a worry and without hearing the gentle footsteps on the stairs.
‘Rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop,’ Evangeline walked into her old bedroom on shaky, unused legs and over to her younger sister’s crib. ‘When the wind blows, the cradle will rock,’ She picked up the sleeping baby and cradled her in her arms gently, and stroked her face with cold blue hands. ‘When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall,’ the baby stirred but didn’t wake as Evangeline strolled over towards the window and opened the glass to invite in a chill that made the sensitive baby whimper in disdain. She held Mari over the edge and stared at the fragile and defenseless creature in hatred. ‘And down will come baby, cradle and all,’ and she let go.....
