Went out to the coop today with an old pill bottle in tow for a fecal sample. A lot of the chickens were having the runs and I was afraid it was worms. So I decided to collect a fresh sample and bring it to the vet. It was surprisingly hard. They poop all the time, but the one time you WANT them to go, they hold it in. The last time we went out, Mom tried putting a plastic bag on Stella's rear and then squeezing her butt to make her poop. It did not work.
We stopped at a local veggie stand and picked up some corn for the birds. When we got out and I started feeding the birds, I noticed something odd on Pancake's head. I caught him and took a closer look. It was a red, swollen wart-like thing on his head below his crest. Dad said it was probably a blister from an ingrown feather and that I shouldn't pop it. Before I let him down I clipped his beak, because it was over half an inch longer than it should have been. Everyone's picking on Florian.
As I was feeding corn to the chickens, Stella and Skunk jumped on my lap to snuggle. God, Stella seems so old. I asked Dad about her face, and we looked at Marcie for comparison. Their faces seemed similar. It eased my fears a bit, but now that I think about it, it may mean Marcie's getting old too. My original flock IS 5 years old...
I kept having nightmares that Burby was injured/dead. When I was in the dream, I was hysterical. I think that when the time does come, I'll act the same. I spent a little extra time with him to assure myself. He's still sneezing a lot, but other than that, he seems fine. I sat with him on the porch for a while.
When I went down to the turkeys, I brought an ear of corn to see of they'd eat it. The turkeys are surprisingly picky about what they eat. Luckily, they eat corn. Initially, they shyed away from me, as they'd been doing for the past couple of days, but as soon as Dad came up, Jenny went into the "pick-me-up" position. It was so adorable. Dad came in and held her. He said she needs to work out more because she's so heavy. When he put her down, she still wanted to be held, so I sat with her for a while. She's such a sweetie. She loves it when I baby-talk to her.
When I went back, I finally got that fresh sample. I sent it in to the vets, and the results will be back by tomorrow.
