Wow. Just wow. I went in skeptical as I generally am with superhero movies, but it won me over fast. The movie as a whole made excellent use of the length and every time I thought that this was the climax, there was more, so much more. Admittedly, I guessed most of the plot twists, but the acting carried me along just fine. Mr. Ledger was particularly stunning. This was nothing like any of his other performances and it gives a glimpse of what else he might have been capable of if he'd lived. There is a dark desperation in his performance that really grabbed me. Mr. Eckhart captured a variety of interesting layers that really fleshed out his role. Mr Bale managed to make me forget who else he'd been this time, for which I'm grateful. I like Ms. Gyllenhaal's character, but I found something about her distracting though I'm not sure what. Mr Freeman and Mr. Caine were workmenlike as usual. Mr. Oldman pleasantly understated. I was genuinely surprised by how much substance there was here underneath all the plot. That pleased me. In fact, the whole thing was excellent.
I do hope there is more of Mr. Murphy in the next one.
