Chapter 8
Callista was surprised when Kiori showed up, she carried a small duffel bag with her.
" Are you staying here, tonight? "
" Yeah, sorry about the late notice, I had to leave the house. "
" Step father driving you nuts? " Callista asked.
" Well, oh hi Orison, what are you doing here? "
"Hanging out with Nikki, she really is a cute little kid, she drew me a picture. " He handed her a piece of paper.
She turned it over and smiled, it was actually quiet good for a two year old. Yet as she looked closer there was a secret message in it, it read:
Run, while you can, he'll get you! Please don't let him get me, please don't let the bad man get me!
Kiori shook her head and handed the picture back to Orison who took it from her, he nodded he knew the message was there, he'd seen it. Yet was she the only one that knew it was there, she turned and looked at Callista who nodded as well, so who didn't know?
- Everyone knows, Eric went home to get some things then where having a big sleep over like thing. We are getting prepared for what ever might happen, we have a feeling its her father. -
- Deleterious? - She gave a mental shudder.
- Hey, I won't let anything happen to you, kay? - She felt his arm go around her, it felt warm and safe.
- Okay. -
" Hi, Ki! Mama, Ki is here, can she stay too, please, please, pretty please! " Nikki looked at her mother with big eyes, pleading.
" Of course she may. "
" Come on Kiori, lets go play candy land! "
" It's her favorite game. " Callista explained.
" Hey, what about me, I want to be the blue piece. " Orison made a pouting face.
Callista and Kiori burst out laughing, though they had tried hard not to laugh, but Orison looked so funny.
" Yeah , you can play too, come on. " She dragged all three
of them into the living room. ****************************************************************
Eric grabbed what he needed, or at least what he thought he would need, it isn't everyday that you had a sleep over at your girlfriend's house. Yet, it wasn't Callista he was preparing for, no it was for Deleterios, he'd read the message too, it was strange that a girl of Nikki's age could write that message in her drawing. Yet, he had to remember who her father was, a witch, a Losteran witch at that. He was scared, he'd admit that, he was scared for Callista and her family. If something happened to her, he would never forgive himself.
" Mom, dad, I'm leaving. " He called, just before shutting the door.
" Wait, Eric! Take this with you! " Karen threw him a pendent. " It will protect you and Callista's family, be safe. "
Eric nodded, then walked up to his mother, he hugged her tight.
"I love you, mom."
"I love you, too, son."
Callista really felt stuck in the molasses mud, or whatever it was, she hadn't really been paying attention, and she was getting more nervous with Eric being gone for so long. When someone knocked on the door, she was the first to get up and answer it, it was Eric, and she nearly tackled him.
" Sorry, traffic was, well really bad. How is she? "
" Fine, we're playing candy land, oh and Kiori is here, she's staying too. "
" Good, my mom gave me this. " He held up the gold chain.
" Hello, Eric, may I see that? " Starion asked.
" Certainly, sir. " He handed him the pendent.
Nikki entered the hall way, her eyes widened when she saw the pendent and then she shrank back, as if in fear.
" Take it away! Take it away! It's hurting me! " She started to scream. " It's burning me! "
" Nikki, stop it! " Callista commanded, and Nikki stopped. " It won't hurt you, Losteran witch, not at all, this is to keep that bad man out! "
Callista took Nikki in her arms and Nikki cuddle in them, and soon was asleep.
" Will she be alright? " Orison asked, looking at the pendent in Starion's hands.
" She'll be fine, she was just startled that's all. Kiori, are you alright? "
She noticed her friend was rubbing her neck, as if it hurt.
" Fine, so we think that Deleterios may be coming? "
" Yes. Why? "
" Then I can't stay here, not if you want to remain safe. "
" He still after you? " Callista asked and when Kiori nodded, she laughed. " Stupid, he might as well be mortal, I know that he as no chance against Orison, not with so much human blood running through his system. Oh don't act so shocked, you think I wouldn't notice. For heavens sakes you have all the symptoms, I think it's kind of cool, actually. Well I'll take Nikki to bed now. "
She gave a small wink to Eric, who didn't say anything, then he spoke in her mind.
- What is it you need? -
- Just for you to tuck me in, that's all. -
- What do you mean "tuck you in"?-
-You know like parents do when your little.... hey, remember that this is my house. - She smiled at him, and then went upstairs.

Kiori sat with Orison on the couch, she pulled away from his embrace. This shouldn't be happening, I shouldn't be doing this, not with him. Hey, he's a better alternative to Deleterios, but father wants me to marry him.
" Hey, don't worry, alright. " He noticed her face flush, he smiled at her. " Look, I know what your thinking, that we shouldn't be because of your job, but don't let that stop you, alright? And don't let that stop me either, believe me because it can't. "
She sighed " Its not you, it's my step father, he wants me to marry Deleterios, and I don't want to see you get hurt. "
" Don't worry, I've got enough of your blood running through my system that I can't be harmed too badly, but I can do a lot of harm. " His smile turned into a grin, and he reached over to kiss her.
She didn't move and yet she wanted to, she had no strength, yet she had the strength of ten mortal men. What was this, why aren't I moving, why do I want this? I'm putting his life, in danger. Not only from Deleterios, but my whole family, well maybe not Maryanna.
- Hey, I'm kind of busy here, would you try to think of something else, enjoy it, alright?_-
- You sure say alright, a lot. - She pointed out.
-Yeah, I know. _- He took her face in his hands and kissed her delicately, as if she were a china doll, and easily broken.

Eric stood behind Callista, as she tucked Nikki in, the girl slept peacefully, she would be fine. Eric smiled at Callista, she smiled back, and he took her in his arms, he kissed her passionately. Then he kissed down to her throat, and she gave a small moan, then stopped him.
" Not in here, come on, you won't be disturbed in my room. "
She turned on a lamp, when they entered her room, and even though it was dim, it still hurt his eyes a bit. She sat down on her bed, and invited him to come over and sit next to her. He sat and kissed her neck again.
" Is this better? " He asked, before feeding on her.
" Yes, much better. " She whispered.
- Tell me if I hurt you. -
- You won't hurt me, Eric, you never could. - She replied. -Would it be okay if I laid down? -
- Do you want to? Am I making you feel weak? -
- Yes. No I'm just a little tired, its not your fault, promise. -
He laid her down, still feeding, he finished and took out his own knife, but noticed she was asleep and put it away. He placed her under the covers, kissed her forehead, turned off the lamp, and went out.
He was met with Starion, who didn't say anything, but he noticed the look in his eyes.
“We didn't do anything, I swear.”
“That is not the question I have for you, son. You don't mind if I call you son, do you?”
“Uh, I guess not, sir.”
“Call me Starion.” He watched Eric nod. “Now I need you to tell me everything you know about Losteran witches, and this pendent.”
