Chikako & Toshiro sat outside the Hospital the saddest expressions on their faces. They had been waiting outside for a while Daisuke had told them to wait for him when they where told to leave by the nurse. He had asked to stay a little bit longer. Toshiro looked up at the sky and moaned, with grief as the only thing on her mind.
“ come on, Hiroki will be fine, he’s not one to give up easily. Besides.. He can’t die, with out him to cheer us on we’ll be lost in the world”, Toshiro spoke with deep remorse. Chikako turned her gaze to her long time friend and spoke,” perhaps not Toshiro, Hiroki he is strong… but he can’t live for ever. Besides say he did die he would want us to be happy and move on with our lives.” Toshiro just nodded in agreement.
In the hospital bed room B 24, Hiroki lye in that retched hospital bed hooked up to a life support system. Hiroki’s Aquamarine gaze was on the stars in the night sky outside, just as a shooting star passed by.
“I saw one” He gasped. Daisuke looked out the window seeing what Hiroki spoke of and replied,” me too.” Hiroki’s eyes welled with tears and he whispered,” their so beautiful..” Daisuke couldn’t help but smile,” yes it is..” Hiroki looked to Daisuke and spoke,” Daisuke, could you read me The Scarlet ibis? Would you please read it to me ..” Daisuke looked at Hiroki & nodded,” summer was dead, but autumn had not yet been born when the ibis came to the bleeding tree..”
Toshiro laughed playing with her hair. “whats so funny Toshiro?” Chikako asked concern on her face. “I was just thinking how far we’ve come since the day we met Hiroki..” she said sadly but with heart.
“For a long time. It seemed forever, I lay there… Hiroki? Hiroki a-are you sleeping? Hiroki?” Daisuke asked with fear in his voice. There came no answer from Hiroki’s seemingly sleeping form. He stood up and left the room letting out a sigh.
The Hospitals front doors opened and both Toshiro as well as Chikako looked in the doors direction, to see Daisuke coming up to them.
“Dai-kun whats the news on Hiroki’s condition??” Toshiro asked worried to death.
“he’s sleeping.. Or what appears to be sleeping anyways”
“what are you saying Daisuke?” Chikako asked. Toshiro just squealed with glee and shouted,” so if he’s sleeping that means he’ll be ok right!?!!”
Chikako Glowered at Toshiro. Toshiro blinked and asked,” right?”
“I’m afraid we wont know until morning Toshi”, Daisuke told her unemotionally. Toshiro looked at her feet and thought ’why does it have to be Hiroki? I should be the one in that bed not him’. Chikako looked at Toshiro knowing exactly what was going through her mind.
“Toshiro don’t go into blaming yourself please,” she begged her best friend,” Right now we need to be strong for Hiroki, Remember that.”
“your right Chikako… but I mean Hiroki is in there for all we know dying and we can’t do anything about it, except sit here…” Toshiro said Gravely as she fallowed the others down the side walk.
“well for now we have to be strong and hope for the best Toshi and no pinning it on yourself”, Daisuke told her firmly but gently as he opened the door to his car,” come on I’ll give you two a ride home.”
Toshiro & Chikako nodded and got into the back seat of the car. It was a long drive, they only made one stop and that was for gas. When they all got home the went to bed hoping tomorrow would bring better news.
The next morning Toshiro was woken by a loud knocking on her front door. She lazily got out of bed and answered it,
”what is it…?”she asked.
There at her front door was Chikako panting as though she had been running for her live.
“Did you hear Toshiro?”
“Hear what?”
“Hiroki,” Chikako took a deep breath,” I received a phone call from Daisuke this morning. He informed me that the hospital called and told him Hiroki had lost all pulsation exactly at midnight last night, Toshiro, Hiroki.. He’s gone.”
“no…”Toshiro’s eyes filled with sapphire water that burned her eyes,” Hiroki can’t be dead he can’t be!”
Chikako hugged Toshiro tightly to comfort her for the loss of their close friend. She patted her back & told her,” He’s still at the hospital if you want to see him one last time before he’s buried in a coffin. Daisuke is already on his way there as we speak we should go too Toshiro.” Toshiro only nodded in reply.
