Zurg Xeebla's Log, date 3789-92-320.
Our generals have targeted Earth and are planning to launch while the planet's weather is fair. We will reach the surface prior to the autumnal phase of the sector known as Gaia, which is the site of invasion. The Earthlings, says the general chief, will not suspect us until we strike. I find their logic to be flawed. They will suspect...
I have been studying a rare plant of my own discovery, the Zok Pod. I found it among the bog habitat of planet Zurg, a new species, and apparently early in its development; this was many weeks ago. I must admit that it was not a promising thing, but something worthwhile to study, if not overly exciting. We have transported it to my mobile lab, imitating its environment. It is thriving. End transmission.

Zurg Xeebla's Log, date 3789-93-002 (Nine days later.)
The spring months of Gaia are winding away. It will not be long before we launch; our slipstream technology allows us to travel much faster than the old warp systems. Though our ships are indeed very fast, it will still be many Zurg months before we reach Gaia, as the distance is very great. Why the leaders wish to go so far to invade is beyond my knowledge or ability to guess. My lab is to be transferred to the Mothership for the journey. Mother sees my work very important, and would like to see me work at times. The mothership is to begin its journey to the sectors of Zurg space where the invasion teams are assembled, at the energy drink factory. There we will proceed to board the teams and package the mutagen we will sell as an energy drink in order to recruit a larger army for an upscale invasion of Earth by transforming the humans into Zurg. The forces we have are barely enough to take Gaia, but with these new members, we will be great enough in number to easily take on the rest of the planet. The generals are hopeful of this plan, as is Mother, but I doubt. I must check on the Zok Pod... it is still not promising. End transmission.

Zurg Xeebla's Log, Date 3789-93-003 (The next day)
The Zok Pod has quintupled in size since the team removed it from the surface--in just ten days. That is the equivalent of twelve Earth days. I have noticed that many insects I have been studying have disappeared, and two small mammals, cages smashed upon the floor. The ship has been swerving madly as we approach the Zurg space outpost of troops--dodging asteroids, I believe. I suspect this is the cause; a bad jar causing the cages to fall to the ground and bursting open, the creatures within escaping somewhere. [Sigh.] I can acquire more. Luckily, nothing here is a hazard...
The Zok Pod is finally becoming more interesting as it grows. I have not yet found the reason for the large, bluish-green pod, from which it got its name--and its thin, spindly leaves do not seem to produce food for it as in other plants. Perhaps it is a primitive life-form… More study is in order. I am learning much about it. End transmission.

Zurg Xeebla’s log, Date 3789-93-013 (Ten days later)
We have finally launched for Earth, and are only four Zurg months away from the planet. I am hoping to land soon; I am not at ease. UFOs 1-9 have begun to argue again. Number 02 is being bullied, the poor child. I hope everything works out.
The Zok Pod has doubled in size in just one week! It is incredible. Now it is ten times larger than it was when I first discovered it. It is getting hard to contain, and is taking up more space than anything else, even the equipment. More of my other specimens—even plants—have disappeared, and I am beginning to wonder if it is due to the skills of the driver at all. Could the Pod be responsible? More research is necessary. End transmission.

Zurg Xeebla's Log, Date 3789-93-14 (The next day.)
Something incredible has occurred! The Pod has doubled in size again, in the space of ONE day! It is thrilling--yet, somehow... terrifying. The Pod is now large enough to hold four Zurg inside comfortably, with extra space within. Even more interesting--and frightening--is that a thin, barely-visible crack as appeared upon its smooth pod. I feel uneasy around this plant, but my research must continue. End transmission.

Zurg Xeebla’s Log, Date 3789-93-18. (Four days later.)
I have taken to observing the Zok Pod from a distance. The crack in the pod has widened and deepened. Sitting there, taking up so much room, growing larger every passing day… It is like a great, greenish beast with spindly feathers sticking out from its invisible legs, great mouth ready to open and let out a roar of triumph, exposing massive fangs before engulfing and devouring the one that looks upon it. I am becoming… afraid. End transmission.

Zurg Xeebla’s Log, Date 3789-93-21. (Three days later.)
All of my experiments are gone. All of the animals I had aboard to study have been obliterated, and even plants have gone missing. I know it is the work of the Zok Pod, and I hope that I am not next. I am going to assemble a team to help me destroy this creature, which I am now unconvinced is a plant at all, but somewhere between that and beast. It has become a danger to all in close contact with it. It must be destroyed. End transmission.

Zurg Xeebla’s Log, Date 3789-93-24. (Three days later.)
I have assembled the team to take into the lab with me, which is now overgrown with roots and great leaves of green and orange, all originating from the Pod. We must be careful not to trip. We attack in four Zurg hours. End transmission.

Zurg Xeebla’s Log, Date 3789-93-47. (23 days later.)
I have been… unwell. The attack on the Pod was… disastrous. Everyone was killed… all except me. The Pod had grown so much that even the six of us were no match for us when it decided to attack. When we approached, the thing split open, faster than we could blink, revealing hundreds of small black eyes and even more huge, dagger-like teeth. The only thing I remember after that was a long black thing covered in thorns as long and thick as fingers shooting out of the Pod’s mouth, lightning quick, going first for me. It wrapped around my waist, tearing into my flesh, injecting me as it went with acidic fluids. I writhed in agony—the pain had been unbearable. I know that the others were hacking at the plant-beast, tearing me loose from its terrible grip. Unfortunately, the damage to my body had been done. My face was on fire, blue-black blood leaking from the open sores; I could not see out of one eye. I had deep gashes and jagged cuts everywhere—blood had been everywhere. The acid that now flowed through my veins was doing even more damage as it traveled through my body, wreaking havoc on the cells it contacted. Suddenly, I was clear of the thorny tendril, and before things went black, strong hands seized me, urging me on to sick bay. The one who carried me passed me on to others who had not been in the assembled team, who transported me to safety while my savior launched himself back into the fight. I never saw any of them again.
When I finally woke, on a soft bed in sick bay, I saw the damage that had been done to myself—my missing eye, cracked skull, broken bones al over… Luckily, the doctors had found a way to neutralize the acids I’d been injected with to stop further damage… I made the decision for robotic replacement parts, for it would be easier and faster than cloning my missing organs and replacing them. With these additions, I am as good as new.
Before the rest of the team had been terminated, they succeeded in killing the monster that had nearly taken my life. I will never forget them for what they did for me. I am getting used to my cybernetic implants, now… it will take some time. For now, I should rest. End transmission.

Zurg Xeebla’s Log, Date 3789-93-49. (Two days later.)
The doctors have released me from sick bay. We have almost reached Earth; we will reach it in the autumnal equinox as planned. My experiments were ruined by the Pod, so I have no work to continue. I have been sitting idle, unwilling to return to the Zok Pod to study its corpse further. It was unpredictable while alive—why should it be less dangerous now?
I have been feeling… strange. In the last two days, I have noticed changes in my behavior. Subtle changes—a tendency to see humor in non-humorous things, like unfortunate accidents and others’ pain. I seem more quick to anger, as well. The doctors tell me that it is an aftereffect of the plant’s poisons. They’re probably right. I will not worry myself with it. End transmission.

Zug Xeebla’s Log, Date 3789-93-50. (Two hours later.)
I almost attacked someone today. Taking a walk to clear my clouded head, I lost control, felt the need.. the lust… to inflict pain. Luckily, in this fit, no one was present to watch me kill an innocent Zurg for reasons that I cannot control or explain. No one suspects me as a danger, though I have tried to tell them! I am going mad. I think I might hurt someone. Again, I am afraid… End transmission.

Zurg Xeebla’s Log, Date 3789-93-52. (Two days later.)
I… find it hard now… to concentrate. The Zok Pod’s poisons had something... something undetectable… in their molecular structure. They are causing me to go insane… I know it! Still no one sees! No one knows! They do not see! They…. They think I am mad, and I am. They must realize… that I am a danger to them all! We are near to Earth now, detecting it on close-range scanners. The smaller ships have broken away from the mother-ship to begin the invasion of Gaia. I am hopeful that the Earthlings may cooperate… and help me. But they are so… The word… What is the WORD? [Groan of frustration.] I cannot think! End transmission.

Zurg Xeebla's Log, Date 3789-93-53 (Three hours later)
My condition is growing steadily worse. I cannot think, and more than my behavior is changing. I am going insane, as I have said countless times, becoming a monster. Sometimes I black out and do not remember what has happened, only to find myself somewhere I did not recall going. I am told disturbing things about such days… They frighten me. Sneaky acts, vandalism… none tied to me, but I see the connection. I will not hold out much longer. I fear the coming meeting with Ron Bruise. I fear the flight alone with Mother and her guard. I fear… myself.

Zurg General Chief Zoolx Goolan’s Log, Date 3789-93-57.
Xeebla, the mother-ship resident ecological scientist, has gone rogue. During the meeting between Mother and Ron Bruise, the insane Zurg slipped away into the human world. We believe that she is a danger to all, Zurg and human alike. She is no longer connected to the Collective. She is banished from the Hive, all ties to her old society severed, declared rogue. Her sentence is to be marooned on Earth for the remainder of her life in punishment for disobeying orders and disrespecting Mother, as well as for her unreliability and disability. End transmission.
