Seriously.
Both of my parents' health are in jeopardy. They have been since I can remember.
I think they tried weight watchers once. My mom lost 8lbs in a year and my dad lost 15lbs. What's wrong with this picture?
On a good diet, little to no cheating, and with regular exercise, the average person should lose between 20-30lbs in 12-16 months.
I was never on that diet myself, but I was around while they were ... and I guess they snuck things when I wasn't around, but ... hmm. :/
Why do I care so much? Because my dad called me fat the other day, when he's rounding that 300lb corner. As for myself, I'm out of shape, but I'm only 125lbs ... so I don't get what he thinks his grounds are for judging ME like that, but I can say nothing to him because he just gets pissed off when I shake a finger at him for eating almost an entire pizza by himself, waiting an hour and then having a sandwich and / or dessert.
On one hand I just want to let him go and do what he wants, but on the other hand I can't let it go because a) he's going to die (seriously, he's been told this numerous times - high blood pressure (weight and anger / hyper-tension issues), high cholesterol, not enough exercise), b) he SAYS he's the pinnacle of good health, but ... dude ... he can't even begin to lie about that, and c) he scrutinizes me about my health and then never takes his own advice.
So he gets about an hour to two hours of exercise a few times a week by biking to work ... which is fine ... but he NEVER varies his workouts, he doesn't lift weights at all, which means he's not doing his heart any favors. Some exercise is always better than none, but you NEED to do varying exercises or else your body's going to get used to that exercise and you will no longer be reaping ANY benefits.
My mom's not any better. She's just about the same weight as my dad, and I feel bad for her because she's always talking about how she doesn't understand why she's not losing any weight.
So she goes to Jazzercise maybe 1-3 times a week, which is an hour and 15 minute work out. Cool ... but then she eats like my dad, if not more than him.
Every day I watch them drink a cup or two of coffee, then my mom skips breakfast and my dad either does the same or sucks down a gigantic smoothie in 10 seconds - 1) smoothies are alright, but they're FULL of sugars, 2) you need to pace yourself, if you eat something that fast you shock your metabolism into not working. For lunch they usually eat out from some deli behind their office ... who's food tastes alright, but the meals are huge and usually just carbs and fat. When they get home, their usual snack is something along the lines of an apple AND an entire can of nuts AND celery that you can hardly recognize because it's slathered with peanut butter ... and then for dinner they have a usual meal (like chicken, salad, and rice), but they serve the largest portions possible and then both have 2 servings. THEN dessert or some snack that most people would consider another meal around 8-10pm.
I feel bad because they're both getting fatter and fatter ... and my mom pretends she's listening to my advice, but doesn't really ... and my dad's just a lost cause. He gets mad when I mention ANYTHING, even if it's just "don't eat that lemon bar / drink that soda since you're sick, the sugar will make you feel worse," "Shut up. I'd rather eat what I want." "But it'll make your recovery time x2 as long..." "Whatever."
I tried being mean about it, but I just made things worse. :/
So, it's out of my hands.
Urgh.
Just something I've been dying to get off my chest for weeks now ... probably be deleted later.
