The Wolf and the Butterfly
The howl...can you hear it? I hear that pack has eluded human capture for the last 10 years. They just keep on thriving. They'd better watch it. Even the most elusive butterfly gets caught in the net.
continued...
Kaylai had recovered from her ordeal enough to stand up without trembling. The alpha’s, Zeal and Therin, had also suddenly become alert. Zeal lay his head down on his paws and yawned, "Ah, Rozielh. I see you have roused."
The young male lowered his head in shame, and let his tail hang between his hind legs. His ears were pressed flat against his head, "Yes sir. I suppose I wasn’t feeling exactly well last moon."
Zeal raised his head and looked back into Rozielh’s cautious eyes, "You still quiver when we speak. Was something troubling you?"
Calpura looked at Roz, concerned. He could act like such a pup at times. It was bound to get him into trouble. Out of every wolf in the pack, it was Rozielh who was constantly in a tizzy over one thing or another. In his world, danger seemed to hide around every leaf just waiting to strike.

"Father, something probably just spooked him. Had it been anything I’m sure he would have let us know."
Zeal looked at his daughter. He couldn’t hold a temper to her. With a sigh, the alpha turned back to Roz, "Go on then. Tell us what had you worked up."
Rozielh looked back at Calpura, and she nodded her encouragement. He thought to himself before speaking. I can’t tell them, they’ll think I’ve really lost it this time.
Zeal felt his impatience stirring. He breathed out heavily, letting Roz know that his time was wearing thin.
"I–" Roz attempted to begin his story, "I thought I sensed a human. That’s all. Just a human."
Zeal snorted and shifted in his spot, "A human? They’re moving into this territory, Rozielh. You are going to see them. Stop worrying about them."
Roz got a shifty look in his amber eyes, and Calpura saw his body begin to tense.
"No, it wasn’t just any human. They had a strange scent on them. It was faint, kind of dark. It smelled almost like, uh, wolf."
Zeal stood up, baring a few of his pearly white fangs, "A human smelled of wolf?! I don’t know if it’s you or your nose, but something is stepping out of its place. Listen to me, Rozielh, you’re nothing more than an omega. Stop with your fantasies."
Rozielh dipped his nose to the ground. Calpura padded up beside him, "Father, please. You asked him to tell us what was troubling him, and he graciously responded to your request. Please, don’t be so hard on him."
The alpha male snarled again, whipping his tail to one side, "Listen Calpura, this doesn’t concern you. He has troubled this pack many times over absolutely nothing! We have spent needless moons worrying over his foolish little quirks. He will have no chance for ascension in this pack with those cub-like habits of his."
Calpura stood her ground, but refrained from disrespecting her father, "I’m sorry father, but this is Rozielh. His fears make him no less of a wolf."
"Fine. Let him be, but keep his worries amongst yourselves. I don’t want this pursued any further."
Zeal turned away, "I’m heading back to the den. Therin, come. Shlotska, Calpura, Kaylai, I’m expecting you home before moon-rise."
The rest of the wolves watched the alphas take their leave. Shlotska sighed. He couldn’t stand his father’s pointless and sudden tantrums. It made him seem very cubbish and thick headed.
Kaylai looked at Rozielh and Calpura. Roz was a scrawny wolf compared to the other males in the pack. He was clumsy, often timid, and not the smartest either, but there had always been something about him that she liked.
"I’m sorry about that, Rozielh. He really did start it that time," Calpura whispered comfort to her friend.
Roz just let his head hang down. He couldn’t look at Calpura. She had stood up and defended him against her own father. He didn’t deserve to look her in the eyes.
"No...I’m sorry Calpura. I shouldn’t be worrying like I am. I don’t know why...I just, sensed it. I didn’t know what to do.”
The she-wolf smiled, "You’re one of a kind, Roz. Don’t worry about it.”
Rozielh knew he was blushing underneath his fur. It didn’t seem fair that he had to be such a meager existence of a wolf. He would never be a strong handsome wolf that Calpura would be impressed by. He would always be the same, weak, little Roz that she had to look after.
Kaylai trotted back to the river side and glanced at a fish directly under the current. She contemplated swatting at it, but decided against the act. Disgruntled, she turned away.
Calpura looked to Rozielh and spoke softly to him, “Hey...why don’t you tell us what you remember exactly? About the human that you sensed the wolf on.”
Roz’s eyes widened as he gazed back at the she-wolf, “Um...well, ok. You see...”
