Charles could bear to see the sight of his mother like that nor his father for that matter. Who would want to kill themselves like that? And his mother was always so happy he couldn't imagine would that was like.
Getting tired he slowed down. Stopping he and looked at his surroundings. This was the 'downtown' area of his town. Small shops all down a narrow two way street, that needed some work done to it. Car windows were broken as well as shop windows. He didn't see a living soul.
He closed his eyes for a moment, remembering what this place had been like before. Bustling people, all happy to know each other, having lunch on the sidewalk cafes. Now, nobody.
Frowning he thought he heard a noise coming from the convenience store. His instincts told him to move on, maybe go back home, but his curiosity wanted him to explore. He didn't want to be a posterboy for the "curiosity killed the cat" proverb, but the cat probably didn't have a 12 gauge shotgun with him. The long door length windows were shattered so he walked in through one of them, glass crunching beneath his feet. It was dark. The only light that filtered through came from the outside, and the light only reached so far. The back of the store was completely dark but from what he could see there was nobody here.
The shop was almost completely empty. It was near cleaned out.
