Welcome to the first post of my journal. Today I will be talking about some basic design concepts of games.
First of all, you need to figure out what type of game it will be. Will it be a text adventure? if so what kind?
Will it be a top-down traditional RPG? if so what type of scrolling will it have? Tile by Tile, Tile by pixel, Pixel by Pixel, or something else that just popped out of your head?
Will it be a 3d adventure game? if so will it be first person perspective or third person?
Next, you need to figure out what the be the major part of the gameplay will be. This is something that most people just do the same way: you walk around, fight monsters, get stronger, and fight some more... but that's not all there is, you could make the game have many different types of objectives, like one task where you fight a party of skeletons followed by a task where you follow a puzzle to find the princess, and another where you build a house for a frail old wizard, all three giving the character more experience in certain areas.
What will the storyline(s) be? This is a heavy part of your game, if the player is, at first, standing in awe of your graphics and/or gameplay but soon realizes that it has a crappy storyline, then they may stop playing and not even give your game another look. You can do many things with the storyline as well, like give the player the ability to change the storyline through their actions or if they fail, change the story based on that.
You don't need to do these things, but I highly recommend it or else you may regret not knowing what you wanted to do in the first place (it's happened to me plenty of times).
Well that's all I've got for today, see you next time.
