Bubblegum Phoenix
It was mid afternoon and he would be skipping his afternoon lessons. His grouchy old Gargoyle teacher was going to yell at him for skipping, but the little boy didn’t care. He raced along as fast as his short legs would carry him, forgetting everthing else in his excitement. He weaved his way thru the city’s maze of wooden platforms and bridges, nearly crashing into Mrs. Gisimanie’s vegetable and home-remedy cart, as he made his way towards the upper east cliffs and his neighborhood, clutching his small prize in his little tan hands.
Sprinting up the long spiraling front stairways to his family’s city mansion, he made his way to the parlor where he found his mother and his older brother, discussing the affairs to the family’s estate, which his brother would eventually inherit. The little boy knew that it impolite to interrupt them, but he couldn’t contain his excitement.
“Mama!” He threw himself into his startled Mother’s arms. “Mama, guess what I saw?! Guess what I saw?!!” He continued before she could question him on why he wasn’t at his lessons. “I saw a Phoenix!” His exclamation was met with a small moment of silence; he didn’t quite understand the meaning of the look that his elder’s exchanged over his head.
“A Pheonix?!” His mother said in an overly dramatic voice, the one that grown-ups used when humoring their children. “And just where did you see a Pheonix?”
“At the market place!” He said cheerfully. His brother scoffed at this remark.
“Don’t be stupid. What would a Pheonix be doing in a market place?” The older boy mocked. His little brother turned to glare at him, planting his little hands on his hips in a childish assertion of superiority.
“He was too there, Daikii! He was there shopping! What else would he be doing in a marketplace?” He rolled his eyes; his brother was so stupid. He turned back to his Mother imploringly as his brother just rolled his eyes and left the room. “He was there! I swear that he was! You believe me don’t you, Mama?!”
His mother nodded kindly, gently patting his blond head and drawing him onto her lap. “How on earth did he manage to fit into the marketplace? And weren’t the vendors afraid of him?” She asked. “Aren’t Phoenixes such large and frightful creatures?”
He shook his head. “Nu-Uh. He was only a little bit bigger than me.” He held his hand above his head to illustrate. “And he wasn’t scary at all! He was reeealllyyy pretty. And the vendors weren’t afraid of him or the dragon.”
“Dragon?” She asked. “Why was the Phoenix shopping with a Dragon?”
The little boy grinned. “He said that they were brothers! He said that they were shopping for their Mama.”
“Oh?” She said, smiling. “And what were they getting for her?”
“Bubblegum!” He held up his tiny prize so that his mother could see, it was a small round ball of red bubblegum. “And he bought me this one to give to you, Mama,” He said as he handed over his prize to his mother.
“Thank you, Adrion,” She said as she hugged him, and ruffled his honey blond hair. "How thoughtful of him."
Adrion looked out the large bay windows in the direction of the marketplace, where he had met the bubblegum phoenix. He hoped that they could met again one day so that he could buy the pretty phoenix some bubblegum.
