The Helpful Hero
On the morning of July 6, 1944, D-Day, otherwise known as Operation Overlord, occurred. A boy just out of high school joined the army right before the US army invaded France. He wanted to serve his country, that's why he joined the US marine corps. When he found out Operation Overlord (D-Day) was going to happen, he was scared out of his pants. He wanted to drop out of the marines, but he wasn't a quitter and he wanted to serve his country until the end.
He wrote one last letter to his mother before he was shipped off to England to be sent into Omaha beach, France. He wrote, "I love you mother, and I won't be seeing you for a while, I will miss you." Your son, Sam. After being sent to England from a training base in Kansas, Sam was put into a LCM3 amphibious landing craft to storm the beaches of France. The squad sam was in was made up of a little team, a few guys were bigger and tougher than he was. A man in a turret at the back of the boat called out "90 seconds till' we hit the beach."Shells were exploding everywhere, they were so loud I couldn't think straight. A landing craft beside us blew up from a 90mm shell. The man in the back of the boat again called out, "30 seconds!!!" Men on the craft got seasick and were throwing up inside and over the sides of our landing craft. Before I knew it the front of the landing craft was letting down. Just as the front was down, men in the front of the craft were getting showered with bullets from pillboxes farther up on the beaches. German 50.caliber bullets were hitting all around. Luckily, Sam was in the back of the boat. He hopped over the side of the boat and started to sink a little bit. He got scared and started going crazy in the water,splashing squirming around, he caught the German's attention and one of them started to fire at him.
