Eire yawned audibly. Mrs. Purlo, Eire’s math teacher, glared at her from the front of the classroom. Eire glared back. She had been sitting in the small desk for nearly an hour. Her legs were numb and her mind kept taking long vacations.

Eire had been attending Lady Roaringham’s Private Institution for Young Ladies for almost five years and had not enjoyed the experience at all. Academia was not her forte. She only excelled in gym class.

Sarafeana, Eire’s twin sister, was sitting in the desk in front of her. She was paying rapt attention to everything Mrs. Purlo was saying. Eire glanced over her sister’s shoulder, but could not make heads or tails of the mathematical equations on the paper. Eire huffed; Sarafeana was always the best at everything when it came to school. She was extremely intelligent, read often, and was in many advanced courses. The only reason she was in Eire’s class was because she had requested it.

Sareafeana turned around and glared at her sibling. She venomously hissed, “Stop trying to cheat. Do your own work.” Mrs. Purlo looked up sharply. “Ladies,” she exclaimed, “it is unacceptable to talk during a quiz. Both of you can expect detention this afternoon.”

Sarafeana was outraged. It was the first detention she had ever earned. Incidentally, it was Eire’s tenth detention that week. It seemed Eire was always late or somehow disrupting the class. She just couldn’t understand her sister’s unruly behavior.

Sarafeana huffed angrily and began to work on the next question: ‘What is the square root of 64, times 7, divided by 8?’ Sarafeana quickly jotted down the number seven and moved on to the next question.

Ten minutes after she was done, Mrs. Purlo announced that time was up. Sareafeana smirked, she had been done in plenty of time, but noticed that Eire had only managed to answer the first question. “Serves you right,’ said Sareafeana ruefully, “now you have detention and a failing grade.” She giggled, delighted at her sister’s misfortune.

Behind her Eire huffed, “You shouldn’t be so happy. If your ego gets any bigger your head won’t fit through the door.”
