Gah! If you won a million $ you find you had a lot more 'friends' than you did before. It's no different on gaia if you save up for 3 or 4 expensive donation items (Thank you FireFox!!!!!!!!) you'll find people sending friends requests and pms asking you to donate from people you don't even remember. People asume you have tons of gold and if they get all sapy then you'll give them the gold they want, when you probably don't have much gold. (If my true friends need gold I give. I'm not scrudge I just find it very anoying!) It's fine if you've been friends with someone for a long time and they need a little gold but someone who you don't know wanting you to get them an item that is 10k and over!
