Chapter 3:
Fading Daylight
Angela sat there on the bar stool crying to herself more and more as time passed, people from inside, the four or five of them, just looked at her as she wept uncontrollably. The television was the only sound inside the bat that had swept over the noise that Angela had committed herself to making.
“We have a new report,” The television started to say as people started to run the streets panicking; their eyes were of a red color. “There’s been some sort of accident at the…” The television broke off and cable fell to the floor from the television. Angela stopped sobbing then and looked up at the cord, along with the others sitting there wondering what was going on.
One person ran into the bar and screamed, “Run for your lives, save your lives!” The person then ran back outside and almost without hesitation fell to the floor and started to shake violently.
People started to run out screaming in agony for helping the bar and moved out onto the streets to be swallowed by the darkness around the alleys and streets, but it the middle of the evening. Angela propped herself up on her feet and looked as red fog formed outside. “The hell?” Angela asked aloud going to the giant front glass window that acted as a wall. It made no sense.
Angela was about to touch the glass when the television began to flicker on and off with one rhythm the it followed. Angela backed away from the glass and looked around the room. It was bare and empty, the streets were covered in red fog, what the hell was going on in the world.
Answers came whether Angela had been ready for them or not. The television tuned back on and the cable still lay dangling in the air as though to taunt her.
“The military has moved in on this situation on Sunset Terrace. Base actings of this incident belong to the,” The television screamed of white noise, but also like a real scream, “now they wait for their chance to invade.”
‘Who do they want to invade,’ Angela asked herself looking around and wiping a tear from her face away.
The door to the stair hallway then started to make some knocking noises, almost exactly at the same moments that Angela had felt her heart beat. Yes this was danger yet it stopped after the first one, and then came loud again. Screams came from upstairs, what were they doing there and here in the streets. Why was everyone running in panic and acting as though the ending the Christians had believed in came. No it could have not been; Angela would not let it.
Angela screamed and in an instant the images from before were just merely a dream, the people in the bar were staring at her, for they had not run out. The bartender was at the bar now, and there were a couple of waiters and waitresses out serving people.
“You ok miss?” the bartender asked Angela.
Angela looked around, “Sorry, just a bad dream I guess. Day dreaming you could say,” Angela said before shutting herself up.
It was minutes of eating here, a small sandwich of toast and eggs for a breakfast and lunch thing, that people would call brunch. When Angela had finished this it was time to get back to work, which she didn’t want. All she wanted was something that she had not had…
Angela had looked at the girl holding a painting, something with red everywhere and people walking through this mist like area. “Honey, what is that?” Angela asked the girl as she bent down to look her in the eye.
The girl bit her bottom lip. “There’s you mommy, right there,” the girl then pointed to a figure on the picture which had only appeared as a shadow, “And there’s the friend that talks to me in my sleep.”
“It’s only a nightmare, alright?” Angela told the girl watching her nod and walk off. “She needs to stop talking about stuff happening like that.”
Angela was now sitting in her car and let out a sigh feeling stress overwhelm her with all the things happening lately. What the hell was that day dream anyways? There was red fog all around the area, people running and screaming for help; even the TV turned itself onto a cable television channel without cable! Must’ve been this job, it was catching up with her.
Angela had worked as a small town receptionist that dealt with e-mails, while the other one dealt with the phone calls. Both were hard jobs, and the pay was not fair for the work. What could Angela do though? She needed the job, this was her chance of getting her daughter back.
Lights started to flicker on as night rolled in and Angela had finished work for the day. People slowly moved to their homes located in the town, but Angela wanted some dinner before she went back home, and the diner from before had suited her needs.
Vroom, the car sounded once more and made a stop at the Diner, practically empty on gas. It stopped at a parking spot in the diner’s own and Angela made her way back in and onto a bar stool like before. She ordered a large salad, the bartender took it as a house salad because she mumbled its name, and went back to make the salad. Angela let herself moan a little and sat back looking at the sunset, it was beautiful with everyone one coming.
“So you still come here huh?” A male said sitting right next to Angela. Angela looked at the male and grunted before looking away. “So that’s how it is huh?”
“What, you expect us to be friends?” Angela asked the male.
The male wore a brown trench coat which seemed to hold some things inside the pockets of the coat. Underneath the coat was a black shirt and blue jeans, meant for running when he needed to catch somebody; he worked for a department that called for him to do so. His hair was brown and was a clean cut. His brown eyes looked at Angela’s face.
“Rick, there’s no way we’re going to be friends after what you did,” Angela said.
“And why not my pretty?” Rick asked, who was apparently the male.
“Because you’re a b*****d,” Angela said getting her water and swallowing some since she was parched.
“Aw come on, we were almost something,” Rick asked.
Angela gripped the water glass tight, only to let it go quickly. “We were almost something. But that was the thing with you, you just knew how to ruin it huh?”
“Aw what do you know?” Rick asked.
Angela gripped the water glass and let the water splash on Rick’s warm skin, making it become cold. “You b*****d, I know well too much. You know what you had done to me, you know what you have done to my family. You ripped it apart you… you…” Angela began to cry, yet it reminded her of something.
Clouds swarmed around the where the sun had been, turning the city to nighttime, apparently the lights had turned on. “Well I might have to rip you apart for getting me wet,” Rick said trying to dry out his clothes.
“I… I have to go,” Angela said heading for the door. Rick stopped her by grabbing her arm.
“Come on, just have a drink with me and I’ll make sure everything gets fixed ok?” Rick asked.
The television inside the bar began to move in and out of the channel from static to the news. On the bottom of the television program it read something about new military operations in Sunset Terrace.
“Let me go,” Angela screamed. The bartender had now just come out with the salad and placed it down. Without a moment to spare now, the bar tender punched Rick in the mouth making him release Angela. “You stay away from me,” Angela screamed running out the door.
Rick watched her go and then looked at the bar tender, straightening his jaw. “That wasn’t so smart,” Rick said with a frown before heading outside after Angela.
Angela moved into an alley and let her crying continue. It was empty here, trash cans located here and there along with a fire escape and such. The wind picked up, and there was this odor in it. Yelling could be heard above Angela, but all she did was ignore it.
The alley was now illuminated as Rick came to it holding a flashlight and looking at Angela. “Come on Angela, this isn’t a good place to be.”
“How would you know, this place is safer than being with you. I trusted you and you striped that from me. What you want to take my life away too, well come and take it then,” Angela said still crying, before going into her kneeling position where she cried and sobbed more.
“Angela… come on we need to get out of here. It stinks and I bet you someone of the homeless have let a leak out in here,” Rick said laughing a little.
“You don’t even deserve to try and get me out of here,” Angela said wiping away some of her tears and then standing herself. More memories flooded back to her now.
“So, how do you like your meal?” The man asked Angela from across the table. She seemed to smile as she ate from a fine dish of lasagna. The man smiled looking around the table, nice red cloth with all the nice tuxedo restaurant needs.
“It’s delicious, thank-you for taking me to such a nice place,” Angela said taking another bite. It was a little hot, the dish that she was eating, but all she cared about was that it was food.
“Well hope you enjoy it for awhile…” The man said looking at her. He only smiled a little now.
“You lie to me, then you turn on me and take her away,” Angela said getting up to him. Her finger was practically poking his chest, but it was only meant to point at him and intimidate him.
Rick began to back up until her was on the street. “Angela listen I’m so sorry about that but-”
“But what, your job comes first?” Angela asked with an aggravated tone. “Or id it that you really didn’t care for me, huh?”
“Angela I love you alright. I wanted to be with you when we had first met but they made me take her away, and I couldn’t do anything about it. They wanted her for something and that’s why I’m here,” Rick said trying to stay off the black pavement of the road which cars were driving down.
“So since ‘they’ wanted her you took her away from me. What is wrong with you Rick, what is wrong with you? You’re just like a pig,” Angela said turning to face an alley way wall.
Rick started to look around and grabbed Angela’s arm. “Come on we’re going to get to some shelter right now!”
“Why?” Angela asked hesitantly before an explosion had come next to her. Chunks of the building crumbled to the ground and a baby was heard crying in the distant noise. Angela had pulled herself up and looked around, Rick had vanished. “Little ********, always cared about himself,” Angela whispered looking around. Explosions occurred about everywhere, blowing up sides of buildings and such.
Rick was actually behind her, which was why Angela had not seen him. Rick grabbed her arm and said, “We’re going to the diner, it’s probably the only safe place,” Rick said pulling Angela along until they reached the glass doors. Rick pushed her inside and barricaded the door from the outside, and then looked in from the outside. “Look, I’m going to find others so you just stay here.”
Angela watched Rick run off now and sighed thinking he must’ve been crazy acting like this. Angela sat at a table now and looked out. Cable hung from the television, it flickered on and off though. Angela noticed this and then looked outside, red fog began to form.
