Work Ethic in the Early Morn
The next morning, I’m up, but not exactly early. I reached over to the bedside table, feeling around for my glasses. I was too lazy to put in my contacts in the morning. I put my glasses on my face, and peeked through my eyelids at the clock. 9:22. I sighed, as I pushed myself up out of the bed. I pushed the covers back and felt a shiver go up my spine.

As I get out of bed and slid across the room to the bathroom, I think back to the dream I’d had the night before. Hannah had been in that dream. Hannah and I had been friends since second grade. Even after I had to move from Pennsylvania to California after three years because of my dad who was in the Navy. During those few years, the only time we got to spend together was two weeks during summer vacation, and she’s the one that flew out to California. She was even there when my parents went through the messy divorce.

Hannah, very much unlike I, had style. She knew how to dress and how to do her makeup perfectly, and how to actually tame her hair. Sometimes, I envied her for it, but most of the time, I was just asking her to help me out. She was, in my mind, the coolest person I would ever know, and the best friend I’d ever have.

Now, though, we’re both a couple of old, big kids with too much time on their hands and too little money in their pockets. Our only thing to make us feel a little bit above the rest is our apartment, and even that’s not too much to brag about. Just that our ceiling in the kitchen is just one big window leading to the roof of the building.

I finished up my shower, quickly pulled my warm, wool robe around myself, and ran out to the kitchen for my normal breakfast treat, blueberry bagel.

“Well, looks like somebody slept in,” Hannah said, sitting at the table, sipping her French vanilla coffee.

“Yeah, yeah. Don’t rub it in. I didn’t sleep too good last night,” I mumbled, as I reached in our half full fridge for my bagel.

“Maybe because your boyfriends from Cali are still calling you at four in the morning, half drunk, crying their hearts out,” Hannah said.

“What are you talking about?” I went over and sat down at the table with her, nibbling and cutting out the blueberry bits with my teeth.

“Well, I was woken up at four to the sound of the phone ringing. It was some guy that said knew you. He was just balling while I was talking to him. I think he said his name was…um…Paul, I think?”

“Paul? My step brother Paul?”

“Oh, not a boyfriend. Anyway, he was crying about some person named Mary. I don’t know,” Hannah said, taking another long sip of her coffee.

“I don’t know who Mary is. I’ll have to call him later. So, you have any plans for today?”

“I’m thinking of actually going out and looking for a job.”

“What?!”

“What? We need the money.”

“But a second job? Why? We’re doing fine right now,” I said.

“Well, yeah, but a few extra bucks wouldn’t hurt either. I mean, are we seriously going to stay with our black and white TV? I’m tired of having to get up to change the channel. True, it’s old school, and everybody thinks it’s cool because we made it look old, but I just think it’s time for a new TV.”

“Well, okay. But you? Two jobs? You’ve already got a job that just has you sitting on your butt, taking money. I’m not sure there’s another one of them around,” I said, chuckling at her.

“No, I stopped by the corner store yesterday. The guy that runs it is looking for another cashier. I thought, why not?”

“That place gets robbed almost every other week. Do you seriously want to get shot?” I said.

“No, but that’s why I want to take it. I won’t be sitting on my butt, taking people’s money everyday,” Hannah said. She finished off her coffee, leaned back in her chair, and put the mug on the counter. “And speaking of that job, I’ve got to go get dressed. Don’t stay in your fuzzy all day long,” she said. She walked off, while I stayed at my place.

What had gotten into her? She was the lazy one and I was the working one. When did she decide to work two jobs? And the corner store? Why? Why would she turn it all around now?

Ah, well. I have to call Paul. My stupid step brother. He couldn’t just solve his problems by himself. He needed somebody to talk to, and that person just happened to be me. Great.
