Cira, named after the glorious sun in the sky, had always been told that she had a big destiny. She was going to help save the town from the mighty beast at the heart of the forest. Because of this she was often treated softly, kindly, sweetly. Above all however, she was protected. As a child she was kept indoors, for fear that her skin would burn. She was not allowed to play with her many older siblings, to protect her from receiving any unsavory scars. She could not leave her room, least she become ill. It seemed that the only thing the girl could do was read stories of princesses and brave knights and above all, of noble sacrifices. Even then, gloves were required to save her delicate fingers from paper cuts. This was all about to change however, for it was the eve of the young one's eighteenth birthday, and the agreed meeting day for the sacrificial ritual.
"Are you ready Cira? Today you become a hero. Tales of your bravery will go down in all of Valleria's history books."
Cira looked into the mirror at her maidservent and only friend. This, she knew, was the last time she would see her friend's tan skin and golden eyes as she fixed white flowers into her half braided hair. Fearful tears welled up in her own eyes as she stared at her own reflection in the mirror. Her pale skin was all made up, and a deep kohl outlined her eyes, causing the deep violet orbs to pop and appear even bigger. Even her lips were painted over in a soft rosy color. She looked like a doll, all dressed up in frilly white clothing, pure in all aspects.
Maddie, the young lady's nursemaid finally looked the girl over and gasped. "Oh no, no!" She reached into a brown pocket and pulled out a cream colored handkerchief. "You cannot cry now, Milady. You would simply ruin your makeup." The handkerchief soaked up the unfallen tears effectively. "Please do not fret. I'm sure that...that the beast will at least be quick about it. You are so small, you will probably just...slip right through his teeth. No pain at all!" If Cira's face wasn't already pale, it was now at the handmaiden's attempt to soothe her. Still, she put on a smile and nodded as she was handed over to the two men who would accompany her to the foreboding castle upon the large hill in the woods.
"Such a shame." One man uttered to the other as the carriage was driven through the woods. "Such a beauty, only to be devoured by that beast." The other man agreed with his comrade with a sharp nod. "Indeed. Do you think the beast would mind if we had a little fun first? I mean, he's just going to eat her right?" Both men laughed loudly at that as the ride into the forest continued. Finally the carriage stopped. It was as far as the horses would go. Cira refused the men's help when stepping out of the carriage, having overheard their lewd remarks. Her stomach churned as she stepped closer to the broken down castle before her. Her heartbeat quickened as she touched the door with pale fingers glowing in the soft full moon's light. In the distance the sound of a horses whinny signaled the carriage leaving her behind. With a deep breath the girl turned woman finally opened the door and stepped inside to meet her doom.
