Ah timelines, the helping hand in every story whether it's about History, Fiction, or Non-fiction as everything has to add up to make everything clear to the reader.
I started a Divergent Fanfiction recently and I thought, "I want these two characters three years apart" so I'm just chugging along (Still opening those Philosopher's Cache's along the way) when I suddenly start to think about the timeline. Now, don't get me wrong, usually everything works out to a "T"...not today.
Within the realm of Divergent, once a child reaches 16-years-old they are considered adults in the eyes of their society. Well, I was going to have my character and one of the original Divergent characters be together before the original Divergent character chooses where they want to spend the rest of their life...and the two characters are...bodily acquainted as well.
(Here's where the timeline issue comes into play.)
As I wanted my character younger than the original Divergent character I just now figured out that my character would be 11-years-old when he first has sex with the original Divergent character (And, yes, I said "he" wink , and I was like, "Hold up a cotton picking minute! What?!?" I am so thankful I caught this before it was shipped out to readers as I would, more than likely, get some bad comments back.
I am now cutting down the distance to two years as (Yeah! I know! 12-years-old isn't much better, but I still want that break where they didn't see each other in a while) I would like to keep my sanity, and the bashing of readers to a minimum. So I am now going to fix that before I forget about it.
