Since my car died for good last Winter, I've been listening to Squirrel's radio station in his car when I'm out and about. I believe strongly it's not okay to mess with someone else's radio. The result is, I've listened to more pop in the last few months than I have since the '80's. I can now recognize 4 Gaga songs besides Teeth, and I hate Katy Perry with the same burning disgust that I had for Brittany Spears back when I was first teaching Middle school. (There are only so many times you can hear "Hit Me baby One More Time" before you start thinking about setting things on fire. Trust me on this.) Anyway, I've noticed that it's very popular right now to sample a pop song, usually from the '80's, then inter cut it with a an unrelated rap. Why the rap has to be unrelated to the sample, I'm not sure, but I'd love someone to explain. Often, I'd rather hear the original song (Heart). The one that particularly amuses me is the one where they wanted to sample "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)." Since the target audience has never seen a record player in person, they could not use the original, instead opting to rerecord with new lyrics rhythmically similar, but unrelated to the original song. The one that tugs at me rather is the "Glory of Love" remix. you''d think i'd have no associations, as I'm not big on smaltzy or sentimental just generally, but in my head, this is alw3ays Ken's song.
Ken was my first paladin, the first person outside my family I ever met who shared my values and belief in honor. He had this Romeo and Juliet thing with Diana, who's family did not approve of his and kept them apart. He had to woo her in secret. He had three goals. 1. To marry Diana. 2. To Become a pilot. 3. To get the hell out of Conchie. He was pure, but not innocent. Though I am neither innocent nor pure, I respect purity of purpose and intent. we spent hours parked in my car just talking about ethics and dreams. I miss him still, the only friend I'd want back from my whole time in Philly.
