The Wire
I'm not big on police drama stuff, and by the time I heard the Wire buzz, it was well on and it wasn't something to pick up in the middle. I finally gave in, as it contained several actors i respect and it was free at the library, and I do like gritty and realistic when I do dabble in police drama. It's been a couple decades since I've been in Baltimore, so it's not like I'd recognize streets, but this sure looks and feels like the Baltimore I remember, or like large stretches of Philly, Germantown, and Norristown in the 80's, or certain nasty bits of New Jersey. It has that bombed out inhabited ruins look of real east coast inner city. The accents aren't as thick as I remember, but I think you'd have to clean it up for clarity. The acting is beautifully naturalistic, suiting the setting. The characters have realistic flaws and ambiguity. I get why so many people love it. It's not quite my cup of tea, but I think I'll stick with it for the acting, characters, and the perfect little details in the look of the thing.
