Gray clouds covered the sky, thunder boomed, and rain started to collect in little puddles on the pavement. The rain cleansed the stains of blood off the streets, but the unpleasant stench of rotting flesh remained. A building, a refuge from the rain and the undead, had boarded up windows and doors. It appeared to be abandoned, but inside it six people waiting for rescue. A girl, only nineteen, was one of the six. She had long, orange, wavy hair and had a few freckles on her cheeks. She was a petite girl with bright, insightful, green eyes. Her eyelids were heavily lashed. She wore a ragged T-shirt and cut up jeans. The shirt was rather large on her, probably someone else’s. Her hair was tied back in a sloppy ponytail and there was dirt and a little bit of blood smeared on her face. She sat on the ground with her knees pulled to her chest and her arms wrapped around her legs. She watched the man standing a few feet from her. He was one of the few amongst the living that she could trust. He spoke to the others very much like a leader. He was discussing how they would get out of the safe house and get to Alaska, where there was said to be a colony of humans. He was only twenty years of age and he spoke to the others like he was the eldest. “What do you think, Aurora?” He asked the red head girl, Aurora.
“I think it’s a good plan- but how do you know it’s safe there?” She asked, her voice full of doubt.
“Yeah, Isaac. You don’t know anything. He’s going to get us killed!” A middle-aged man spoke, nearly shouting. A woman stood by his side with her hands around his arm.
“George, please. Let’s not fight.” She said, running a hand through her pale blonde hair nervously.
Aurora looked from George to Isaac with a worried expression; Isaac kept his eyes on Aurora the whole time. “We don’t have many options. We’re running out of food, and before long, the infection will find a way in here. Then we’ll all die. If we go, we have a chance of surviving and having a normal life.”
Aurora stood and nodded, “Let’s go.” Isaac smiled at her, and turned to walk into the kitchen. “We’ll leave within the hour.” He said, leaving George and the others speechless.
George and his wife, Ellen went into their room, and the two others stayed behind. Hayden and Seth were the other two, they were only fourteen years old, and the boys were twin brothers. They both had short, brown, saggy hair and light blue eyes. “Aurora, are we going to die?” Seth asked her with sadness in his voice.
“I-I don’t know.” She said unable to lie. “When we get to Alaska, everything will be better.” Aurora added to lighten the mood.
