Wild Heart [Unfinished Story] Chapter 1- The Angel
You can hear the loud footsteps from across the hall. The dark mystique and malicious intent of the people living here could be sensed from a mile away. Two low voices fill the halls with doubt and fear. Their mumblings and serious chatter echoed into the dark corridors. The only other sounds that could be heard were the ticking of the clock and the twittering of large, carnivorous birds outside the mansion. One would wonder why the young child that resides in this dark and mysterious place sits quietly still like a beat and broken doll. She utters no ill-word and never cries. She only sits quietly, listening to the voices outside her room. Nothing scares her except that of her own confinement and silent misery and yet she never cried… once. “Lev!” yelled a short, young lady holding a wooden spoon. “How many times do I have to tell you to stop staring at that mansion and help me finish work here? You’ll be working there soon. You’ll have plenty of time to look at that mansion inside and out… Lev?” “Huh?” Lev answered her with confound. His hazy blue eyes were fixed on her. His raven hair was messed beyond repair. He practically looked like a homeless man who hasn’t slept in days. “Agh! You’re hopeless!” The young lady paused. “Look, I’m your best friend. I’ll do just about anything for you but you have to help yourself!” “Vienne, don’t act like my mother so much.” He got up and fixed the ruffles on his shirt. “I’ll miss you.” He kissed her forehead and headed for the door. “Where are you going?” Lev was already putting on his coat when Vienne asked. “Let me do the groceries for you just this once. You know, I hate seeing you coming home with such heavy things.” “Thank you, Lev.” She sighed. “Don’t catch a cold!” “I won’t.” Lev closed the door and headed for the market. It was a warm summer day. The people were crowded in the markets, shops and streets. Lev didn’t particularly like being closed in by the masses. He decided to take a breath by the fountain in the town square. Waiting it out sounded like a good option to him. He approximated that the people should all be gone in an hour or so. After a short instance, he noticed a strange phenomenon. The masses were being driven back. They cleared the way for an ornate black carriage being led by the finest-looking horses in town. The very sight of it perplexed people. Lev noticed a young girl of sixteen inside the carriage. She had flaxen hair of peculiar white, the same color as her skin, pale as snow. Her rosy cheeks and lips were the only color on her skin. The carriage flashed by and was gone again. Lev went to one of the shopkeepers and asked about the young girl. It seems people believe she is an angel. As such, she was snatched from her biological parents and taken into the governor’s mansion.
“Hmm… An angel, huh?” Lev pondered as he went on with his work.
Lev made his way back to the house without anything peculiar happening. He spread out the groceries on the table, hoping that Vienne would make dinner for him before she left. He took his seat at the small and peculiar-looking old, wooden table. Vienne entered the room with a piece of paper in hand. She was reading a letter for a ball to take place two weeks from now. Lev raised his head and asked Vienne: “Hey… When you go to the market, do you see an ornate black carriage pass you by? Have you seen a girl with peculiarly white skin?”
“Ah…” Vienne replied unsurprised. “Yes. Lady Eloise van Flux of the van Flux mansion?”
“Her carriage passes by almost every morning. I take the opportunity to get everything I need while the people all stare~! Pretty ingenious, don’t you think?”
“Listen? Is she really an angel?”
“Pfft~! Of course not! Those are just folk rumors. Don’t go around thinking every amiable girl in town is an angel. They did take her because Lord van Flux is getting old and still a bachelor.” She leaned in closer. “Rumor has it that he’s infertile.”
“Shush! I don’t care about town gossip.”
Vienne raised Lev’s down-facing head and said in a soft whisper. “But you do? Otherwise, why would you ask me if she was an angel?”
“Mr. Reason and Rationality… Are you simply out of your senses or have you plainly discovered the joys of drinking?”
“Shut up! You’re the only one who drinks liquor around here! How would you like it if I told your father?”
“Father’s a drunkard himself. It’s fine as long as mother doesn’t know.”
“You ought to be ashamed of yourself. You’re out of your head, Vienne!”
“Oh? Am I out of my head? Between the two of us, who do you think values reason and logic although he’s already decided on becoming a butler where it’s not necessary?”
“Vienne. What part of temporary don’t you understand? I told you, I just need to gain access to Lord van Flux’s books because they’re the most updated in the country. Other than that, it’s quite honorable to work for the most powerful family in this neighborhood.”
“Deep down, it doesn’t look like you even like what you’re about to do. You can’t do an ounce of housework, Lev. How do you expect to survive there?”
“I have no choice. I can’t live off of my inheritance for too long.”
“Again, my condolences to your dear mother and father but… I don’t think they will approve of what you’re doing to yourself either.”
“Whatever. You’re my best friend. Let’s not argue.” Lev wrapped his arm around Vienne’s waist. “So, have you found your ‘perfect mate’ yet?”
“You have a strange way of teasing me, Lev.” She paused. “No, I haven’t found him yet but there is someone who has caught my eye.”
“Well, tell me about him.” Lev demanded impatiently.
“Well…” Vienne broke into a smile. “He’s charming, adorable, educated, reasonable-”
“Really? Sounds like a canine companion if you ask me.”
“You don’t even know who I’m talking about here!”
“After hearing what you said, I don’t think I want to know.”
“Hey!”
“Listen, I’m going to take a nap, okay?”
Chapter 2- The Best Friend
Vienne left the meat to simmer for a while. She went up to Lev’s bedroom and found him sleeping soundly. She sat by his bedside and rubbed her fair hand on Lev’s forehead.
