Trapped
Trapped inside my own home. Who would’ve thought it would ever come to this? I pull my trembling, skeletal fingers through my dry hair. My hazel gaze turns towards the covered window. No amount of money in the world would tempt me to look outside.
I don’t want to see the charred earth and dark red rivers. All the horrors of war in the history of the world have gathered around my humble home in only a few nights. A piercing whistling sound fills the air. Quickly I drop to my stomach and cling to the floor, the soft carpet rubbing gently against my face.
The whistling becomes silent, then is immediately followed by a pop; an explosion. I also hear sounds no one should ever have to hear, even though I’m shielding my ears as best I can. The homes down the street from me are burning; I can hear the crackling of flaming wood and the moans of my half-dead neighbors.
There is nothing I can do. If I even pull the curtain aside to view the gory scene, I will be shot to death. Oh woe is me. At least my neighbors have escaped this bloody hell… My thoughts are interrupted as the house trembles violently. I bite my tongue to keep from crying out. If those barbaric soldiers even hear me breathe, they will, of course, kill me.
As I lay still on the floor, my imagination takes me into heaven. Paper flowers, blue clouds, and a broad purple sky. Daisies dance in the wind, and little faeries sprinkle their glittery goodness upon small children. Sweet cupcakes with rainbow candies on top… A little girl- me, perhaps? - giggles and eagerly awaits her turn to open a wrapped gift.
Small pudgy hands grasp a box and tug on the ribbon. The silky ribbon falls to the ground after much struggling. The shiny wrapping paper is torn into pieces. The hands reach for the top of the box…the top comes off…and my world explodes into blood, fire, and darkness.
