I haven't finished season 1 Dexter, but being so familiar with the books, I watched the first half of season 2, since it came first from the library. I'm a little bummed out by them humanizing him so much. It's sort of contrary to the point. I'm usually in favor of character development, but it doesn't fit how people like that work psychologically. It also turns out I really didn't want to watch Dexter have sex. I mean, in the books he had sex too, but it was of no specific interest to him, so it was noted rather than explicit. it seemed wildly out of character for him to be so overtly passionate in bed. The show's still well acted and interesting, but I'm disappointed all over again.
