I cry out with no reply And I can’t feel you by my side So I hold tight to what I know You’re here and I’m never alone. Never Alone by Barlow Girl
…Lo I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Matt. 28:20 ________________________________________ The night was cold. He’d known it would be. After the twin suns of Tattooine sank below the horizon, temperatures dropped to below freezing.
It was fitting, somehow, that the physical coldness should accompany the loneliness that echoed in his soul.
Of their own accord, images flashed through his memory with a horrible and painful clarity. The Temple – his home for all of his childhood – burned and in ruins. The bodies of Jedi strewn within like rag dolls – some of whom he recognized. Friends. Teachers. Fellow Knights. And Bant. Sweet, gentle Bant. He still wasn’t sure if he believed it or no, that his Bant was gone.
Obi-Wan’s throat closed as he remembered her lifeless body splayed on the floor.
It was then that the worst memory of all revealed itself. Anakin, on that fiery planet, screaming his hatred of Obi-Wan, the Jedi, and everything he once fought for.
His heart wrenched as if from a fresh wound as he recalled how the flames had engulfed the body of his pupil, and friend. Just as the Empire had engulfed and destroyed the Jedi Order. He still could not believe that Anakin, the man he loved like a brother, had helped with that twisted and sadistic task. But now, instead of that trusted friend, the one every one thought to be the Chosen One, stood the epitome of evil.
Obi-Wan wanted to cry out at the unfairness of it all! But he wouldn’t. Order or no Order, he was still a Jedi. Life is not fair, or unfair. It merely is. It is up to each of us to be fair of unfair. The words entered his mind in the voice of his beloved Master, Qui-Gon, who’d spoken them to him as a Padawan. But instead of calming him, the thought of his Master merely deepened the feeling of loneliness inside him. But as he sat there, more words from his youth disclosed themselves. Nothing is lost, where the Force dwells. And the Force is everywhere.
Somehow, those words comforted him now just as they had when he was a boy. Closing his eyes, he reached out with his senses to a very familiar place. A place where he found a welcome and familiar companion. A companion, he knew, that had always been there.
In the dark of the Tatooine night, Obi-Wan smiled a soft, weary smile to himself. That old piece of wisdom still held true today – With the Force, he was never truly alone.
The End
