This story is written shortly after Lucas has chosen to serve Lord Geth and spy on the rebels but before the events of the RP
There were always the new places, new faces that’s what I remember most about those early years. That was the life for most children of those who rebelled against Lord Geth. We moved from place to place as our parents did, in my case it was my father. He had some role in the rebellion, one I was never interested in and to this day do not care to know, all I do know is that it took him from one rebel encampment to the next and my mother and I followed dutifully.
I remember the children too. There were very few who could call a single camp home, many like me travelled from place to place, and it was rare to meet the same child twice. Therefore friendship was not something I valued very highly, after all how can you make friends knowing that it may be a matter of days before they will be gone from your life forever. So we often had a temporary type friendship; we would explore and play games but it was a given that we never sought to get to know one another on a deeper level. Despite our young minds we soon learnt after the first few times that it was best if you put nothing more than names to the faces. No attachment, no pain of loss.
My father was rarely with us at each place we went. My mother and I were often left in the ‘civilian area’ of the hideouts and camps where the children and those attached to a rebel, but not actively involved, were allowed to reside away from the rebellions goings on. When we asked why we were always informed the same response; it was to keep us safe, but I think it was more to protect their secrets. Anyway, my mother and I were very close after all she was the only real constant in my life and even now not a day goes by when I don’t think about her at least once my guardian angel through the fear and confusion of my early childhood caring for me as my world was thrown into confusion at with move and comforting me every time we hid fearing the Dark Lords troops as they searched for us.
However, the darkness that had been kept at bay could not be held off forever. I can’t remember the name of the town we were staying when my world was shattered. Although what does it matter the name of one of many towns which ended their existence in the same fashion, but I digress. It was late night where we were staying, my father had gone to attend some meeting, which I can assume now must have been of importance as why else did the events of that night occur. The ‘civilians’ were sheltered at the edge of the town in a small abandoned water mill and I don’t know to this day where the attack started, but I do remember the screams starting up first at a distance but soon getting closer.
We had been in villages that had been attacked before and I had seen the after effects first hand despite my mother hiding my eyes. Often it was only a few who were killed as the troops stormed the houses seeking the rebels out. That is what has led me to believe that the meeting my father attended that night bore some significance, this time it was different. We followed the experiences of the past, we were to stay hidden after all the interest of the troops would be on finding the rebels themselves and not us, but tonight that was not an option.
I don’t know how the fire started only that it must have been intentional, but suddenly the timbers of the mill roof were suddenly ablaze. We were pushed and knocked towards the doors then by the tide of ‘civilians’ trying to escape the smoke and flames that drifted down from the burning roof, and eventually with burning eyes my mother and I exited into the cool air. I remember the growing horror in her eyes then as I looked up at her face; the lights of the fires of the infernos which had up until a short while ago served as the homes of innocent villagers. Then I saw something that I will never forget, and which will haunt my nightmares for the rest of my days, the troops of the Dark Lord the shambling zombies and swarming skeletons killing all who tried to flee the chaos.
Suddenly my father was beside us I don’t know how he and the few other rebels that dispersed themselves amongst us escaped the hell of what had once been a perfectly peaceful village but as they guided us to the forest he was alongside my mother. Alongside her as the arrow pieced her back, alongside her as she dropped dead at our feet. Others fell too of course as the skeletons arrows fell amongst our numbers killing or fatally wounding those who were hit, but the only face I remember is my mothers eyes glazed as my father dragged me away from her into the trees.
My father went back for her two days later, I know he didn’t want me to follow but he had no will left to stop me. Since that night we had to go into hiding we lived then in the forest not far from the town, I think perhaps my father had felt that the rebels would send people to find out what had happened but to my knowledge they never did. When we got to the town I saw just what hell looked like corpses lay where they had fallen in the street, the buildings were nothing more than charred rubble and the smell of fresh decay was everywhere. I fled then my mind unable to deal with what it saw this was where the rebellion led to death and chaos and for what?
We buried my mother by the lean-to and as far as I’m aware that was the last time I saw my father as any more than the mindless body he became no more mentally alive than Lord Geths troops. I hated him then, the fool who had let my guardian angel die for his cause and now what was he but a husk drinking leaving me to fend for us. I kept him fed and cared for his basic needs but other than that we did nothing together, instead I spent my time at the village I had cleaned it up and each day I would wait for the rebels to come, but they never did.
Finally one day my father didn’t wake up. By then we never spoke I fed him his food and left to be on my own I had little animosity towards him now, true I still disliked him for his idiotic faith in the rebels but I had become accustomed to his vacant stare the all-pervading smell of the alcohol and I think I had come to think of him as misguided instead of the villain. The real villains I realised then were the rebels. Those who had left us not caring what had happened to those who died here, their men and innocents alike, we were obviously expendable to them.
On the day of my fathers death I didn’t cry I simply buried him next to my mother the pain I had felt since the death of my mother had finally past into the dark recesses of my mind it had leaving a cold emptiness instead. I think it was then that I made the decision to follow my current course. I saw clearly for the first time that the rebels despite what they claimed were worse for the people than the rule of Lord Geth. After all they had let so many die here, so many innocent lives lost because of their presence in this place. I left the place then, to this day I return to the resting place of my family and it is still uninhabited by humans although the forest has finally begun to reclaim it.
A few months later I had made my way to a town just West of Lord Geths citadel waiting and planning my next move. I had in the time since my fathers death come across the rebels and they had let me back in amongst their numbers far easily than I had thought it would be, it seemed my father had indeed been someone worthwhile although they had cared little for his fate until I had informed them and even then their sympathy seemed contrived most likely to get me on side. I played my part well taking on the roll of a messenger and infiltrating their ranks until there could be no doubt of my loyalty. But inside I felt no compassion for any of the rebels who I planned to betray, only those ‘civilians’ who foolishly followed them as we had.
From the village I approached the main gate of the citadel I remember looking up at the dark clouds that continually swirled overhead matching the feelings in my heart and despite the anger in my heart I felt for the first time the terror of what I was doing hitting home for the first time. But I was fixed on my course of action and despite the dread as I was led to the throne room by the skeletal guards. However, despite my fears the Dark Lord accepted me to his service and to this day I have served him loyally as a spy and will continue to do so as long as the rebels fight to destroy the peace my Lord wishes to implement.
