UT2004 Mutator Concept: Choose Your Gibbage
Yup, got more ideas for possible UT2004 Mutators. Recently I've given the Bloody Hell gore system that comes as part of the Ballistic Weapons Mutator Pack more air time and I have to say the content of gore it has to offer still blows me away (or rather the random bots I've gibbed during each match). It's something worth seeing for yourself and I've been a fan of both gore systems. Of course there are always those who wished the UT2004 Gore System could be more like Bloody Hell yet still retain its comical feel of the lower torso (pelvic area + upper legs) remaining intact upon total gibbage and those who are wondering how other gore systems would work in UT2004. For me, I've always wondered how UT2004 would be like with the Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks gore system in which everything pretty much explodes yet all the gibs are completely recognizable. I could offer multiple Gore System concepts for use as a mutator basis, but why do that when all that can be rolled into one?


UT2004 Gore Mutator: Choose Your Gibbage

With there being fans of both the standard UT2004 gore system and Bloody Hell, in addition to those looking for something new, I figured on a rather curious gore system concept in which you're allowed to choose what parts get gibbed and how the gibbage is like.

I. Basics

In Choose Your Gibbage, you can customize your Gore System by tweaking the gibbage properties of the following fourteen parameters, each corresponding to a different section or part of the body.:

- Head
- Upper Torso (Waist and upwards.)
- Lower Torso (Pelvic Area.)
- Upper Left/Right Arm
- Lower Left/Right Arm
- Left/Right Hand
- Upper Left/Right Leg (Does not include the pelvic area.)
- Lower Left/Right Leg (Up to the Knee.)
- Left/Right Foot.

What you can choose for each part is whether or not it gibs, and if it does gib, how it gibs from a list of options. Here is a total list of gibbing options:

Common Options for all parts
- No Gib: The part in question doesn't gib.
- UT2004 Gib: The part gibs as it does under the standard UT2004 gore system.
- Bloody Hell Gib: The part gibs as it does under Bloody Hell.

Head
- Exploding Brains: The head explodes into a shower of brain matter that splatters all over the place. Similar to Bloody Hell.
- Head Splitter: The head is blown in half vertically with the cranium and brain visible. Based on the Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks gore system (MK:SM from here on in).
- Eyeball Splatter: The head for the most part remains intact, but the left eye and the upper left quarter of the head is blasted into a mix of crimson mist and skull fragments. The fact that it's always the same part that's gibbed is a reminder that "This is Unreal--it doesn't have to make sense!"

Upper Torso
- Indestructible Core: This makes the upper torso the indestructible part of the body upon gibbage. In the case where everything else is gibbed, blood will spurt from the arm sockets, the neck, and entrails will have spilt out from where the lower torso was once connected.
- Torso Splitter: Upon gibbage, the upper torso explodes into two halves vertically with all the internals visible. Borrowed from the MK:SM gore system.
- Spilling Entrails: The torso pretty much remains intact. Instead of torso destruction, the target's entrails (be they internal organs for organic beings or mechanical parts for machines) will explode out the target's right side, shattering the rib cage (or whatever equivalent for machines) and spilling all kinds of internal bodily fluids from the exploded opening.

Lower Torso
- Indestructible Lower Torso: Basically makes the lower torso indestructible as in the standard UT2004 gore system. What makes it different is that blood will leak from where the upper torso and legs were once attached, bringing it on par with the Bloody Hell-styled Indestructible Core gore option.
- Ouch.: This has the lower torso asplode in half vertically upon gibbage. Pretty much based on the MK:SM gore system only that in Shaolin Monks, the lower torso was pretty much part of the upper left/right legs, so any destruction of either of those two body parts pretty much ensured the destruction of the lower torso completely (Ex: Scorpion's Spear Slice Fatality does this even though he doesn't slice through the lower torso at all.)

Arms and Legs

With arms and legs, gore customization follows a scale of how much of the limb can be gibbed.

Hand -> Lower Arm -> Upper Arm -> Shoulder Blade
Foot -> Lower Leg -> Upper Leg -> Arsecheekz o.O

Basically you can choose for only the hand to be gibbable, the hand and lower arm to be gibbable, or for the entire arm to be capable of being reduced to gibs. Note that gibbing any part of the limb will also gib whatever's to the left of it on the above chart. For example, gibbing the lower arm will also gib the hand and gibbing the upper leg will also gib the lower leg and the foot.

This can be customized for each limb individually, so you can literally have extremes like a left arm that can't be gibbed at all, a right leg that can only get its foot gibbed, a right arm that can be gibbed up to and including the lower arm, and left leg that's so completely gibbable that the target looses his/her left arsecheek.

NOTE: In this gore system, deaths that normally cause skeletalization are swapped out with an effect in which the victim runs around as if he/she were on fire before being gibbed completely via the setting selected for each part of the body. So essentially if all the MK:SM-style gore options were selected, you've practically duplicated "Toasty!" in UT2004. XD


II. Fun Stuff

What makes the Choose Your Gibbage concept even more fun is that in addition to creating your own form of UT2004 gore from the available gore combinations, you can pretty much re-create already existing ones.

UT2004 Gore System Enhanced

Requirements: Lower Torso Gore option set to Indestructible Lower Torso; Everything Else set to Bloody Hell.

Description: Basically the UT2004 gore system with the same effects as Bloody Hell. That way you can have the lower torso be indestructible instead of the upper torso.


Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks Gore System

Requirements: Head set to Head Splitter, Upper Torso set to Torso Splitter, Lower Torso set to Ouch, all limbs gibbable.

Description: A complete replica of the MK:SM Gore System in UT2004--all body parts are gibbable but are still recognizable as body parts that were once part of someone as opposed to unidentifiable parts.


Intact Pain

Requirements: Head set to Eyeball Splatter, Upper Torso set to Spilling Entrails, Lower Torso set to Indestructible Lower Torso. Limb gore settings are arbitrary.

Description: Total gibbage takes a different approach. The head and body remain curiously intact structurally, but in exchange for a coffin service that does not require individual small coffins for every single body part, the torso has its entrails spilt and part of the brain is missing along with one eye. Thus, intact goriness.


So there you have it--my concept for a variable gore system to be used in UT2004. Of course, I can't code well and I'm not a graphics major so whether or not anyone will take inspiration for such an idea remains to be seen.
