Prologue
I remember the day when I first saw the dark silhouette. Standing in the attic entrance, I watched a dark outline of an arm pick up a child’s toy, study it, and place it back in its original position. He must have sensed my presence. He slowly turned his head to the right. A beam of light hitting his face revealed his true character. The flesh of his face had vanished years ago, as if he was a fire victim. He smiled as his eyes met mine, showing his razor sharp teeth. I couldn’t move, and I couldn’t breathe. His hand rose into the light, revealing 5 sharp claws.
“Oh my god V, hurry up!!” Lita's voice echoed through the hallway. “Ok, ok! Jeez, I’m coming.” Vanessa sprinted into the living room trying to put on her jacket. “Ok let’s go.” “Finally.” Vanessa eyed Lita’s dress. “You look like an old lady.” She said with a chuckle. “Oh shut up.”
She closed the door behind her and inserted the key into the lock. She rotated it clockwise. The lock made a snapping sound, and she rotated it counter-clockwise. Pulling the key out she dropped it in her bag. “So, is Jon going to prom with you?” “No, I doubt it. I bet I’m going to get stood up.” She sighed and lowered her eyes sadly. “Then that means he’s not good enough for you.” “I guess… but we’ve been together so long. Suddenly, he’s had eyes for Myra.”
