I've read fables 1-5 and I love this series. Although the amount of comic books I read is generally limited I do like to pick one up every now and then if it seems to contain some literary value. For Example Vertigo's Sandman series has quite a few references to classic literature and mythology. Well Fables is also by Vertigo so it's no surprise that It also is filled with classic literary references.
What makes it different is that rather than pulling from references you may have picked up in required reading in school (such is the case with Sandman) it takes old fairy tales. Not the happy ending fairy tales. There will be characters there you may not have heard of if you are getting your information from Disney. Remember Rose Red? No? Well she is Snow White's fraternal twin and she was in the original story of "Snow White and Rose Red". She is in this. Ever hear of Blue Beard? No? Well you get my point.
I get a kick out of getting reacquainted with characters I have known for a long time. But I enjoy even more being challenged to hunt down the old OLD stories and get to know some of the characters that have been lost in antiquity and are finally being brought into the light again.
Like I said, I don't spend a lot of time with comic books but if a comic book can get more people to pick up actual books, then I am all for it. Plus the story(ies) are engaging and the art is beautiful. Overall from what I've read of the series so far it's very well done.
