40 years ago, my mother, pregnant with me, sat in her new house, holding hands with my Father as they watched with tense excitement a man walk on the moon. It had been two years of riots and assassination and tension and fear, yet there in the silence of space bounded men living a beautiful dream of technological knowhow, cooperation, and determination. People looked up at the sky and thought of a better future.
It didn't come. We pretty much gave up on space and even science in my country in my lifetime. still inside every little kid growing up in the shadow of Apollo 11, there was a beautiful hope.
Happy 40th, Apollo 11.
