I squeezed Kory's hand as we stood in the second row of the sopranos, with our backs to the children at Kharington Primary, waiting for the music for "Ease On Down The Road" to start so we could spin around like Michael Jackson. I let go when it started. "Doo-doo-doo-do-do! Do-Do-Do-Do-Do! Doo-doo-doo-de-do! Come on and- Ease on down- Ease on down the rooad!" we did a box step to the left. " come on and ease on down, ease on down the rooad!" I did a box step to my right. "Dont you carry nothing-" I caught the person in front of me... By the time we finished just that song, Kharindton Primary was on their feet cheering. Although they were only between the ages of 5 and 7. They'd probably cheer if we just stood there making goofy faces at them.
We ended with our arms in the air. Smiles upon every face, but got only weak applause from Kharington Intermediate. 8-10 year olds are really hard to please. Kory and I exchanged glances as we lowered our heads and put our hands behind our backs for the beginning of "Footloose". This song is mostly all kicking which wears you out but you have too much adrenaline to notice. Halfway through the song, the audience was ours. Then the time came for the male-female split. The boys kept with the melody while us girls kicked around for "Cut Footloose!" but put our hands on our ears so our elbows are out and bring our heads down and around for the "O-ooh-o-o~oh!" The audience went wild!
"We will, we will, rock you!" We sang in line for food at Mcdonalds. Kory and I have just gotten our food when Mrs. Walters puts an arm around each arm around our shoulders and asks. "How are my two best girls doing?" "Good!" we answer in unison. "Mind if I sit with you?" "Sure" I say. I walked over to a big table in a corner by a huge window and claim it as ours. It had never occurred to me that Mrs. Walters had no adults to sit with on these outings. Maybe she's knwon me and Kory for so long that she looks at us as "friends". I mean... we ARE 8th graders. "Alrighty girls" she whispers once she sits down, " Can you girls keep a secret?" We give her a look. "Good! Because there's something that I really want to tell you two," she pauses to eat a fry. "Cindy, I mean, Mrs. Holmes, is coming to check out the new 'meat'" she made quotes with her fingers. "And she'll be informing the elders about 'Sinsational Beavers' Well? Do you girls love me or do you love me?" she smiles, satisfied. "We love you!" I yell hugging her tightly around the arm. "You mean just to inform? Not audition?" Kory asks "Well, Idont know. We'll have to see." Although we could tell by her voice that she indeed DID know.
