It smells like burnt plastic and dead bodies in here. Evil, I tell you. And that! That elevator music they make you listen to? It messes with your head so when they get you in there they can strap you down, remove your organs, and sell them to some Mexican; all while you're still alive, watching while they take our your kidneys and st-- Eon tells me to shut up; I'm scaring the kid over there.
Yeah, I know. I can smell his fear. It's delicious. Got his little heart pumpin' so fast. Oh well. I promised to be good.
Sabutan is over in the corner, talking with the receptionist. Her heart's goin', too. She thinks he's flirting. It's all innocent conversation to him. Something about recycling. She's batting her lashes at him like she's got somethin' in her eye. When I laugh, Eon looks at me like I'm crazy. But his eyes fall and he turns away. What? Am I contagious?
There's a loud buzzer that goes off behind the Plexiglas wall and the lady finally turns away from Mr. Muscle to look at her papers.
I hear my name before she calls it. "Ms. Yuki? The doctor will see you now. Ms. Yuki." She repeats like I can't hear. I hear, okay, lady? Her voice is droning. Even I would probably fall asleep after a conversation with that. She says it like she gets psychos every day. She's just expecting it. I decide to have a little fun.
I take Eon by the arm, ignoring when he cringes (my skin is cold, I guess), flip my hair back, and saunter up to the receptionist desk like I'm some big shot. She looks at me, first with such disinterest I think I might hit her, then with surprise. I smile.
Her funny blue eyes widen and her penciled-on eyebrows raise all the way up to her hairline. I can see black roots coming up from blonde strands. I laugh out loud. Then, just to piss her off, I take Sabutan too. They both lead the way to the doctor's room, obviously knowing that I want to show off. I never get to use my new powers on people. It's kind of fun.
And amazingly hilarious.
Eon instantly drops my arm when we get through the door. Sabutan lingers for a moment before sitting in a chair on the other side of the small room. I don't like how white everything is. It almost hurts my eyes. I hear footsteps coming towards a different door, opposite to the one we came through.
Truthfully, I'm expecting some old balding man, coming in to test my urine (which I don't produce) or take my blood (try that one, buddy), then tell me that I'm pregnant and to be on my way.
That's not how things work.
The door opens with a kind of breeze. Maybe it's just the essence of other vampires. But when that thing opens, very slowly, I can just feel a gust of warm wind coming at me. It reminds me of Summer.
Eon and Sabutan are instantly up-right and attentive.
Doctor Scott, as it turns out, it in fact a vampire. I can tell right away (amazing entrance) because of his lack of a beating heart. It's just the shallow breathing from his lungs. Also because of his mind. Vampire's minds move at such a different, faster speed than that of a human. That's why our movements are so easy and quick. We can run a mile before the signal that you want to move your legs gets from your brain to your body.
This makes it so much easier for me to read several people at a time; unless of course, you make those people vampires. It's like a big blur of words. And we jump from subject to subject so fast. If I sit there and concentrate on that only, sure, easy.
The thoughts going through the doctor's head sound something like: "WeneedtogetmoretonguedepressorsandcottonballsRoomfourisMr's
HempillislookinghealthierIwonderwhattheywillmakeforlunchnothtatI
eatanyofitnastystuffSowhathavewehere?"
I realize he's speaking the last words.
He gives me a strange look.
"Oh. I got knocked up, doc."
He nods. Interesting choice of words. "And how long ago was this?"
"That's what I'm here to find out." I shrug.
He gives me another strange look. "And the father?"
Eon and Sabutan shift uncomfortably.
"One of those two, I'm guessing. Who keeps track anymore?"
The doctor sighs.
