They were pulling me down. Straight to the bottom. Trying to scream was pointless under water. They had won. Again. I couldnt take it any more. I let out bubbles of air trailing up above me to the surface.

Ive had that dream so many times since the accident. You see my parents own their own boat. Or should I say owned. Anyway, we used to spend weekends on it just relaxing after a stressful week. But we hit the reef one day. The boat sank, my parents along with it. That was one month ago. My name is Morgan. Im 15 years old. An orphan, obviously. One little sister who is 12. Everyone says we look alike. Same straight blonde hair, blue eyes and really skinny. My sister Carly and me have the biggest secret ever. This secret is what saved us the day the boat sank. You see when we touch water we grow tails. I know it sounds really stupid when I put it that way but its true. Were mermaids. It happened when we where having a weekend on the boat. Carly and me wanted to go snorkelling along the cliffs; my parents thought it was a brilliant idea. While we were snorkelling we found a cave in the cliffs edge so we checked it out. There was a weird pool there and a tunnel going up showing the sky. Carly and me decided to stay there and we must have fallen asleep. I woke first and when I noticed it was night I woke Carly. Anyway that night was a full moon and just after we got into the pool to swim out the moon came up over us. The weirdest thing happened then. The pool started to glow and bubble but when the moon left it was the same as before. The next day when we touched water we grew these beautifully graceful blue mermaid tails. The first time we went swimming was amazing. You feel like youre gliding. We also have powers over water and the weather. We can control water, freeze it and heat it. We can also create wind, storms and lightening. My nightmare seems kind of pointless seen as I cant drown but I think the only reason I have it is because of the trauma of losing my parents that way. Or something like that. Anyways now we live with our Grandparents on our Dads side. They live in Australia right by the beach, which is good for the whole mermaid thing.
I hate it here, Morgan. Carly cried our first morning.
Chilax, ok. Youve only been here a few hours.
But it feels like years. Carly mumbled.
Hey, you saw how close to the beach we are. Itll be fun to actually be able to check out everything on the whole mermaid thing. You know see what we can really do. I whispered the last two sentences not wanted my grandparents to hear.
So how are my favourite Grand-daughters today? Ready for school? My Granddad asked strolling into the kitchen.
No muttered Carly darkly.
She means yes. I stated, giving her the evil eye.
Right, well do you want me to give you a lift or do you want to walk?
Well be fine walking thanks. Carly sniffed coldly.


Why do you have to be like that with them? I hissed once we were at school.
Because they try to make everything perfect when its not.
You cant blame them for trying, Carly. Theyre doing their best. It was their son and daughter-in-law that died you know.
I dont care! Theyre trying to act like it never happened!
Because we all have to get on with our lives! Not linger on the past!
What and not lingering on the past is forgetting them? Ive got to get to class. Cya. Carly muttered, walking briskly away. Let her cool off before I talk to her I thought to myself. Finding my homeroom wasnt easy I can tell you that now. But luckily I did and my teacher, Miss Newberry, told a girl called Aqua to show me around. Aqua had the most beautiful long brown hair that came down to her waist and sparkling green eyes.
So your new here then?
I didnt reply. When it comes to meeting new people I guess you could say I was shy.
Well, duh. So how come you moved here to Gold coast then? There we go now thats a better question. She gave me a big dazzling smile after she said this.
My parents died in a boating accident and now my younger sister, Carly, and me now live with our Grandparents.
Whoa, heavy. Do you wanna, like, cry on my shoulder or something?
Huh?
Soz, I guess that was a little tight wasnt it?
A little. I agreed.
Hey youre not supposed to agree with me. Giving me the dazzling smile and a little shove. I decided that I really like Aqua so I gave her a shove back. We ended up having a shove war.

Hello? Is anyone in? I asked shutting the door after Carly and me.
Who cares if theyre in or not?
I do as a matter of fact. I replied grinding my teeth together.
Were in the lounge! My Gran called. Carly and me went though and found them sitting on the couch.
So how was it?
It was brill. Carly?
Was alright, I suppose. She grumbled.
Make any friends? Gran asked.
Yeah, her names Aqua.
Thats a nice name. How about you, Carly?
Nope.
None at all?
They dont like me. Ill never make friends. Sighing deeply she added, walking out the room.
I wish I could go home.
Will she be alright, Morgan?
Ill go talk to her.
Do you wanna go for a swim? Carly asked as I walked into her room.
What now?
Yeah. She grunted, rolling her eyes.
